11th-Ranked Edinboro Suffers First Defeat, Falls 2-0 at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 17, 2016) – The 11th-ranked Edinboro University women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the year today, falling at Kutztown by a 2-0 decision. The Fighting Scots fell to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC after getting off to their best start since 2012. The Golden Bears improved to 4-2 overall with a 3-2 PSAC mark.

In a rematch of last year's PSAC quarterfinals match, which Edinboro won, 1-0, the Golden Bears got on the board in the first 30 seconds. Schyler Ackerman scored after Edinboro junior goalkeeper Sarah Baskey deflected a cross by Alaina Curry to give Kutztown the early 1-0 lead. The Fighting Scots looked to even the score, but were held to five first-half shots with two shots on goal. Baskey collected five first-half saves to keep the Scots to within one goal at halftime.

Both defenses remained strong through the first 30 minutes of the second half, keeping the score as is. But Kutztown found some insurance in 77th minute when Ashley Engler deflected Baskey's attempted clear, which Madison McClelland gathered and scored on an open-net opportunity for the 2-0 Golden Bears advantage. Edinboro looked to get back to within one when Sidney Dobbins fired a shot following a corner kick by Ashley Mutkus, but Kutztown blocked the shot for a team save.

Baskey collected a season-high nine saves, despite Kutztown leading Edinboro, 21-10, in shots and 11-4 in shots on goal. She fell to 5-1-0. Taylor finished with four saves to improve to 2-1-0.

The Fighting Scots return home to face California (Pa.) on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:00 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
