No. 20 Women’s Soccer Scores Three Second-Half Goals, Pulls Away at Pitt-Johnstown for Third Straight Win

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (September 27, 2016) – The 20th-ranked Edinboro University women's soccer team pulled away with three second-half goals, including two in a span of 40 seconds, for a 4-1 road win at Pitt-Johnstown for their third straight win. The Fighting Scots continued their best start in school history with an 8-1-0 overall record with a 7-1-0 PSAC ledger. The Lady Cats fell to 0-9-0 in both categories.

Junior forward Alex Brown found the net in the 13th minute for her fourth goal of the year, playing the ball off a defender into the open net to give Edinboro the early 1-0 lead. The Fighting Scots took the one-goal advantage into halftime, despite a 9-5 first-half lead in shots. Brown nearly had a second goal at the 28-minute mark, but her shot hit the post.

Sophomore midfielder Halle Hammer provided the Fighting Scots some insurance with a 50th-minute goal off a cross by Brown for a 2-0 advantage to start the second half. But Pitt-Johnstown answered quickly when Kaitlyn Eckley netted a goal to the bottom right corner on a through-ball from Kyra Watkins in the 52nd minute to trim the Boro's lead back down to one.

The Fighting Scots continued to fire away shots, and hit pay dirt with a pair of quick goals, both in the 68th minute, to extend their lead to three goals. Junior midfielder Ashley Mutkus scored from in the box off a pass from Katie Felitsky, while Alex Root netted one on a breakaway just 40 seconds later, assisted by Danielle Chatten.

Edinboro finished with an 18-6 lead in shots and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Lady Cats were called on eight fouls, while the Fighting Scots were called on two.

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Baskey tallied one save to improve to 8-1-0 on the season. She moved into fourth all-time at Edinboro with 21 career wins. Leigh Appolonia dropped to 0-9-0 in net for Pitt-Johnstown.
