Fighting Scots Suffer Heartbreaking Loss After Recovering From a Four Goal Deficit

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Edinboro women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss in the final minute of play at Seton Hill on Wednesday, 6-5, at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.

With less than 12 minutes to play and trailing 5-3, Coleen Brodman scored back-to-back goals for the Fighting Scots (5-6-3 overall, 4-6-3 PSAC) at 85:56 and 88:48, tying the game at five goals apiece. However, the tie was short-lived. Just 26 seconds later, Emma Porteous scored the game-winning goal for the Griffins (11-4-1, 9-4-1) with only 46 seconds left in the contest.

The Fighting Scots had fought back into the contest, after trailing 4-0 in the opening 22 minutes of play.

In the third minute, Abigail Skatell scored her first goal of the season at 3:41, collecting a cross from Katie Kimmich and tapping the ball into the back of the net. At 13:57, Emily LoPresti netted her PSAC-high 15th goal of the season on a breakaway opportunity. Over the next seven minutes, Kimmich and Madison Schwerzler found openings in the back of the net for the Griffins in the 18th and 22nd minutes, respectively. Kimmich's first of two goals on the day came off a one-on-one opportunity, while Schwerzler shot and scored from the left side off a Syaani Harris assist.

At 25:20, Sarah Reidy would notch her second goal of the season, and the first of three straight Edinboro goals. She collected a cross from Ashley Mutkus, and shot the ball past the post and into the goal. Alex Root would pick up her first goal of the season at 40:42 off a shot from the top of the box and past Jessica Neill.

In the second half, Mutkus brought the Fighting Scots to within 4-3 in the 66th minute, off a through pass. Cameron Bujnoski picked up her first career point on the assist.

In the 78th minute, Kimmich scored again, as Sawyer Patrick passed Kimmich the ball for her second breakaway opportunity in the game.

The six goals given up by Edinboro were the most since an 8-1 loss vs. Bloomsburg in 1997, the programs second season of competition.

After scoring a goal and collecting an assist, Mutkus moved into ties for fourth place with 34 career goals, and tenth with 14 career assists. She also moved into fifth place in career points (82), while also becoming the fifth Fighting Scot in program history to register 80 or more points in their career.

Edinboro outshot Seton Hill, 19-16, and held an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The Fighting Scots travel to East Stroudsburg on Saturday for their final road contest of the season. The game is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start.
