Edinboro Blocks Its Way to Five-Set Win over Gannon on Dig for a Cure Weekend

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to upset Gannon on Friday night, 3-2, in a matchup of the top two teams in the PSAC Northwest Division. The Fighting Scots prevailed by scores of 25-21, 17-25, 22-25, 26-24, and 15-12 to improve to 14-7 overall and 4-6 in the PSAC. The Lady Knights fell to 18-4 and 8-2, respectively.

Tonight's match, along with tomorrow's match with Mercyhurst, are part of the Dig for a Cure Weekend. The Edinboro volleyball team annually raises funds for cancer research, with this year's proceeds being donated to the Roswell Park Institute in Buffalo. The Mercyhurst match gets underway at 5 p.m.

Edinboro used strong play at the net to snap a three-match losing streak and snap Gannon's eight match winning streak. The matchup featured the two preseason favorites in the Northwest Division, with Gannon voted the preseason favorite and Edinboro second. The Fighting Scots have now played eight five-set matches this season, going 4-4 in those contests.


Trailing 2-1 after three sets, the Fighting Scots found themselves trailing 20-16 in the fourth set. They would finally take the lead at 22-21, with the two teams going back and forth after that. A Maggie Wilhelm kill for Gannon knotted the match at 24-24, but Edinboro would pick up the winning two points on a pair of hitting errors.


Gannon grabbed an 8-6 lead as the two teams switched sides in the fifth set. Back-to-back block assists by Sydney Trathen and Tessa Sikora gave sthe Scots the lead at 9-8. Gannon tied the fifth set at 9-9, but Edinboro proceeded to run off the next four points for a 13-9 advantage. The points came on a Trathen kill, followed by Ciera Jackson and Sikora with a block. Challen Litwiler's service ace boosted the lead to 12-9, and Sikora's kill capped the run.

An exchange of points gave Edinboro a 14-10 lead before Gannon scored twice to make things interesting at 14-12. Trathen's kill provided the winning point.    

The Fighting Scots showcased a trio of players with double-figure kills, led by Litwiler with 15 kills, along with a team-high 24 digs. Jackson added 13 kills and six block assists, while Sikora tied her season high with 10 kills, along with two block solos and three block assists.

Trathen had 47 assists and seven kills. Paige Morris also contributed seven kills, and had eight block assists. Edinboro finished the match with two block solos and 22 block assists.

Kelsey Ansec led Gannon with 22 kills, while Sara Crandall had 21 digs and Carolyn Knollman finished with 36 assists.
