Mutkus Ties Career Records, Joins Manns with Hat Trick as Edinboro Hands UPJ 7-0 Defeat

EDINBORO, Pa. – Powered by hat tricks from Ashley Mutkus and Rebecca Manns, the Edinboro women's soccer team posted a 7-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday night at Sox Harrison Stadium. The win snapped a two-game losing streak as the Fighting Scots improved to 6-7-3 overall and 5-7-3 in the PSAC. UPJ fell to 1-15-1 and 1-13-1, respectively.

The hat tricks by Mutkus and Manns marked the third time in program history that at least two players had a hat trick in the same match. Both scored three goals, the first time a players has found the back of the net three times in a match since Jansen Hartmann scored three goals against Seton Hill in a 7-3 win in 2015. That was also the last time Edinboro scored at least seven goals in a match.

The three goals by Mutkus leaves the senior tied for the career lead in goals with Liz Debo with 38, and in career points with Nicole Vlahovic with 90. She recorded her second career hat trick, previously scoring four goals against Mansfield in 2014.

She will have one opportunity to gain sole possession of those records. The Fighting Scots wrap up the 2017 campaign on Saturday hosting Bloomsburg. The match gets underway at 1 p.m.

Edinboro grabbed a 2-0 at the half against the Mountain Cats as goalkeeper Maria Mosquera turned in a number of outstanding saves throughout the night. The Fighting Scots exploded for five more goals in the second half.

Manns scored the first of her three goals – matching what she had coming into the season – in the ninth minute as she scored on a breakaway off a beautiful long feed from Halle Hammer, beating Mosquera from 10 yards out from the left  side.

The lead grew to 2-0 on Danielle Chatten's seventh goal of the season, assisted by Marissa Shields, at 29:53. Chatten scored 20 yards out of a throw-in.

Mutkus scored her first goal ten minutes into the second half, scoring on a rebound off the goalkeeper after a shot by Hammer. The margin grew to 4-0 at 63:49 on the first of back-to-back goals by Manns. The sophomore headed in a free kick by Alex Root in the right corner.

Manns notched her hat trick at 72:30 with Sidney Dobbins assisting on the goal. She tracked down a shot that bounced off the goalkeeper to the left of the net and scored on an open net.

Mutkus accounted for the next two goals within a span of just over a minute. The first, at 75:29, was assisted by Coleen Brodman. She fired a long shot from the far right side of the field over the goalie's head. Seventy-three seconds later she made it 7-0 while tying the career goals and points scored records on a shot from in front of the net that went over the goalie's head again.

Mutkus now has 15 goals and 4 assists for 34 points on the season. The 15 goals are tied for second in a season, and the 34 points ranks third.

Edinboro ended the night with a wide 31-11 advantage in shots. Sarah Baskey recorded her 15th career shutout, finishing with six saves. Mosquera had 12 saves.
