Coleman, Beck Power Edinboro to 85-74 Win Over Millersville in PSAC Opener

EDINBORO, Pa. – Five players scored in double figures as the Edinboro men's basketball team opened PSAC action with a hard-earned 85-74 win over Millersville at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots are 2-0 on the young season. Millersville fell to 1-3 overall, and 0-1 in the PSAC, while losing for the third straight time.
 
Anthony Coleman led all scorers with 23 points. The junior college transfer made 9-of-16 field goal attempts, including 3-of-6 3-pointers, along with 2-of-4 free throws. Mike Beck added 19 points, with the senior making 7-of-10 shots overall, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
 
After being limited to four points and making just 1-of-6 field goals in the first half, Jaymon Mason warmed up in the second half to finish with 15 points. In the process, the senior guard moved past Kenny Tate and Tim Smiley into third place in career scoring with 1,561 points. Mason added eight rebounds and five assists.
 
Keyshawn Liggins, coming off a 34-point effort in the opener vs. Thiel, finished with a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Jaryn Simpson came off the bench to make 3-of-5 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, to finish with 11 points.
 
After taking the lead late in the first half, Millersville maintained the advantage for the first ten minutes of the second half. Edinboro finally grabbed the lead for good with just five minutes remaining. Coleman broke the eighth tie of the game with a 3-pointer from the left wing that bounced high off the rim, then spun around for a 69-66 advantage with 4:37 to play. Simpson followed with another three as Edinboro forged a 72-66 lead.

Millersville eventually pulled to within 74-72 with 1:42 to play on a layup by Jordan Greene. Beck answered with a three from the left corner for a 77-72 lead with 1:39 to play, and after a Millersville miss, Liggins dropped in a pair of free throws for a 79-72 advantage. Simpson, Mason, and Maceo Baston added a pair of free throws each to end the game.
 
Edinboro jumped out to an early lead 11-point lead at 18-7 with 13:03 remaining on a layup by Coleman. The Fighting Scots would lead for much of the first half before the Marauders took their first lead since the opening basket with just over two minutes remaining.
 
Millersville would outscore the Fighting Scots 11-3 over the final four minutes to grab a 46-39 halftime lead. The Marauders committed nine turnovers in the half, compared to seven for Edinboro, but those seven miscues led to 11 points, while Edinboro scored five points off turnovers. Millersville shot 60.0 percent over the first 20 minutes, making 18-of-30 field goal attempts.
 
Coleman (13 points) and Beck (11) combined for 24 of Edinboro's 39 points. Beck made 4-of-5 shots, including 3-of-4 3-pointers. Mason was held to just four points, making 1-of-5 field goals. Marcus Adkison and Greene had 14 points apiece for the Marauders.
 
Edinboro shot 50.0 percent from the floor for the game (29-of-58), including 12-of-24 on 3-pointers, and was 15-of-23 at the line. However, they made 10-of-12 at the charity stripe in the second half. Millersville cooled off after a torrid first half to shoot 50.0 percent for the game (30-of-60), making 7-of-17 3-pointers. The Marauders went 7-for-8 at the line.
 
The Fighting Scots held a 37-31 edge in rebounding. Both teams committed 13 turnovers.
Adkison paced Millersville with 22 points, while Jordan Greene added 20 points and seven rebounds. Conrad Chambers and Mark Perry were also in double digits with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
 
Edinboro returns to action on Sunday afternoon with another PSAC crossover contest, hosting eighth-ranked Shippensburg at 3 p.m.
