Sharpe Sparks Big Third Period as Edinboro Improves to 5-0 with 82-64 Win over Shippensburg

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team used a dominant third quarter performance to improve to 5-0 with an 82-64 win over Shippensburg in a PSAC crossover contest at McComb Fieldhouse on Sunday. The Fighting Scots are now 2-0 in PSAC play. Shippensburg falls to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The 5-0 start is the best since the 2011-12 squad ran off 24 straight wins to start the season. It also gives Stan Swank 559 career victories, tying Bloomsburg's Charles Chronister for the most wins in PSAC history among men's and women's coaches.

The outcome was never really in doubt as the final score was not indicative of the course of the game. Edinboro took the lead for good less than three minutes into the contest, and it was a single digit lead just twice from the end of the first quarter on.

The Fighting Scots led 38-27 at the half, forcing 15 turnovers. The Raiders stayed within striking distance thanks to a 13-for-13 showing at the line. Lindsay Embly's layup to start the third quarter pulled Shippensburg to within 38-29. Edinboro would score the next 11-0 points, and ended the period with a 31-15 advantage to lead 69-42 after three quarters.

The catalyst in the quarter was junior Cheniya Sharpe. Seeing increased minutes with Ciara Rosten sitting due to an injury, the 5'11" forward was seemingly everywhere in the quarter. She began the 11-0 run with a steal and a layup. During the stretch, she would add an offensive rebound for a basket, and grabbed another offense board and fed Jontay Walton for a 3-pointer to cap the run.

All told, Sharpe had five points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals – in the third quarter alone! Edinboro would finish with two 11-0 runs in the period.
The lead was all large as 32 points in the third quarter, and remained a 20-point plus advantage until Shippensburg scored the final ten points in the game.
Walton would lead a trio of Fighting Scots in double figures with 25 points. The redshirt junior guard made 9-of-23 field goals, including 5-of-11 3-pointers, and was 2-for-2 at the line. Walton added six assists and five steals.

The bench would outscore Shippensburg 28-8. Sharpe ended with eight points, 13 rebounds – 10 on the offensive end -- with four steals and three assists. Allison Thompson added nine points and eight rebounds.

Shippensburg's Ariel Jones led all scorers with 28 points. Embly was the only other Raider in double digits with 11.

Edinboro shot just 35.4 percent from the floor (29-of-82), but made 12-of-29 3-pointers, and forced 30 turnovers that led to a 32-10 advantage in points off turnovers. In addition, the Fighting Scots outscored the Raiders in second-chance points, 17-0. Shippensburg shot 47.9 percent from the floor (23-of-48).

???????Edinboro is off now until returning to action on December 2, when Swank looks to set the PSAC career record for wins by a basketball coach at Mansfield.
