Coleman Scores 22 But Edinboro Falls in Final Minute at Mansfield, 69-64

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 69-64 loss on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC crossover contest at Decker Gymnasium. The Fighting Scots fell to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC with their second straight road loss, while Mansfield improved to 2-3 and 2-1, respectively.

The back-and-forth game featured 20 lead changes and nine ties. Neither team led by more than six points, as Mansfield led by six at 40:34 with 16:07 remaining, and Edinboro held its largest lead of five points at 16-11 with 12:40 left in the first half.

Edinboro would grab its last lead at 64-61 with two minutes remaining when Trey Staunch scored on a layup and hit the ensuing free throw. Mansfield came back down and Jeremiah Worthem nailed an open three-pointer from the left corner to knot the score at 64-64 with 1:47 left.

???????Keshawn Liggins would miss a 3-pointer on Edinboro's next possession. Mansfield missed a jumper and a 3-pointer, but grabbed the offensive rebound after each miss. The Mountaineers dominated the glass during the day and it ultimately proved the deciding factor, as Cedric Powell pulled down the rebound on the second miss and scored on a layup with 22 seconds to play. Powell was fouled on the play and converted the free throw for a 67-64 lead.

Following a timeout, Liggins missed a long contested three from the left wing with four seconds remaining. The rebound went out of bounds to Mansfield, and Powell hit a pair of free throws with three seconds left to account for the final points.

Anthony Coleman led Edinboro with 22 points, making 6-of-9 3-pointers. It is the third game this year the junior guard scored 20-or-more points in a game. Liggins registered his fourth double-double in the last five games with 17 points and 14 rebounds, adding four steals.

???????Jaymon Mason, Edinboro's third all-time leading scorer with over 1,600 career points, was limited to just seven points while saddled with foul trouble. The senior guard picked up two fouls in the first 55 seconds and played just one minute in the first half.

Staunch, the offensive tackle-turned-forward, recorded a strong effort off the bench with seven points and four rebounds in 21 minutes.

All five starters scored in double figures for Mansfield, led by Malik Carter with 14 points. Matt Tamanosky had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Worthem finished with 12 points and 11 boards. Tyler Moffe added 11 points and Powell finished with 10.

???????Edinboro would shoot 35.5 percent from the floor (22-of-62), but the Fighting Scots made 13-of-30 three's. The Fighting Scots went to the line just seven times and did not miss.

Mansfield shot 41.7 percent from the floor (25-of-60), making 7-of-22 3-pointers. The Mountaineers were 12-of-14 at the charity stripe. The Mountaineers won the battle of the boards, 43-33, and had a 30-12 advantage in points in the paint.

???????Edinboro will continue its four-game road trip with the second of back-to-back PSAC crossover games on Sunday, playing at Lock Haven. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
