Fighting Scots Withstand Late Rally for 68-64 Win at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team proved that three scorers are better than one on Sunday. The Fighting Scots survived a last-minute rally by the Bald Eagles to snap a two-game losing streak with a 68-64 win. The PSAC crossover win, the first road win of the season, gives the Fighting Scots a 5-2 overall record and 3-1 in the PSAC. Lock Haven is now 2-5 and 1-3, respectively.

On Saturday, Edinboro saw Mansfield score the final eight points for a 69-64 win. A day later, the Fighting Scots made 4-of-5 free throws in the final 27 seconds to hold off the Bald Eagles.

The Fighting Scots never trailed in the game, and the contest was tied just once at 10-10.  Edinboro maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half, and appeared in control when Keshawn Liggins' dunk gave them a 64-52 lead with 53 seconds remaining. Jihad Barnes' jumper made it 64-54, and following a Boro turnover, Amir Hinton's dunk closed the gap to 64-56 with 38 seconds left. Edinboro would commit another turnover, and Barnes scored again as the Bald Eagles were now to within six points with 31 seconds to play.

Liggins made a pair of free throws with 27 seconds remaining to boost the lead to 66-58 with 27 seconds to go. Lock Haven wasn't done yet, as Alsmith Saintilius drained a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 66-61 with 19 seconds remaining. Four seconds later, Trey Staunch stepped to the line and made two free throws for a 68-61 lead. Hinton scored the last of his 30 points with a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left. Liggins would miss the front end of a one-and-one, but just four seconds remained at that point. Hinton would miss a three as time expired.

Hinton finished as the PSAC's leading scorer a year ago, and the 6'5" redshirt sophomore showed the Fighting Scots why, as he finished with a game-high 30 points. However, no other Bald Eagle managed more than 10 points.

Edinboro, meanwhile, had four players in double figures, led by the big three of Anthony Coleman, Keshawn Liggins, and Jaymon Mason. All three have scored at least 30 points in a game this season. In fact, today's game marked the first time no Fighting Scots reached 20 points, as Coleman led the way with 19 points, 13 of those in the first half. The junior guard made 7-of-17 field goals, including 3-of-6 3-pointers. He added four assists and three steals.

Liggins finished with his fifth double-double in the last six games, as the 6'5" senior contributed 14 points and 14 rebounds, six on the offensive end. He added four assists. Mason continued to struggle with his shot, but scored a pair of big baskets early in the second half to build the lead to double figures. He finished with 11 points, adding six rebounds and four assists.

The fourth double figure operative was undersized forward Staunch. Better known for his exploits on the football field, the 6'3" junior contributed 10 points in 15 minutes, making 4-of-5 field goals and both free throw attempts.

Staunch and starter Jack Frank provided the Scots with good production inside. Frank enjoyed his best game of the season with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Edinboro won despite shooting just 36.1 percent from the floor (26-of-72), and was at just 30.3 percent in the second half (10-of-33). Lock Haven wasn't much better, as the Bald Eagles shot 39.4 percent (26-of-66). In fact, both teams made 26 field goals, and both went 8-of-9 at the line. The difference – Edinboro made 8-of-23 3-pointers while Bald Eagles were 4-of-18 from beyond the arc.

The evenly-matched contest also saw Edinboro hold a slim 43-42 edge in rebounds, and both teams committed seven turnovers.

Edinboro returns to action with another PSAC crossover contest, playing on the road at Cheyney on Saturday, December 9.
