Offense and Defense In-Sync in 9-6 Win at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (March 11, 2017) – The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team opened their three-match spring break trip in impressive fashion on Saturday with a 9-6 victory at Shepherd. The Fighting Scots scored eight first-half goals and utilized tough defense in the second half to hold down the Rams and jump to 1-1 on the year. Shepherd dropped to 0-5.

Edinboro defeated Shepherd for the second consecutive year after posting an 11-2 win over the Rams in their first-ever meeting in 2016.

Emily Peters led Edinboro in scoring for the second straight contest with four points, tallying three goals with one assist. The senior midfielder moved into a tie with Katie MaGee for fifth all-time at Edinboro with 93 career goals. Freshman midfielder Elysia Garland scored two goals, the first two of her career, while Stephanie Chido and Olivia Potts each recorded two points on one goal and one assist.

Goalkeeper Paige Skinner finished with 10 saves, including nine in the second half, as she improved to 1-1 on the year. Shepherd's Casey Hickman fell to 0-5 on the year in goal.

Peters, who tallied a match-high six goals against Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday, picked up where she left off on Saturday, scoring the opening goal of the contest with 23:53 to go in the first half. After Shepherd answered with two goals to take a 2-1 lead with 20:40 before halftime, the Fighting Scots reeled off four straight goals to lead, 5-2, with 14:19 to play in the half. Peters notched two more goals in this stretch, while Garland scored her first career goal. Stephanie Chido provided Edinboro's fifth score of the day, assisted by Peters. A Rams score by Courtney Matthews with 12:54 to go in the first half did little to stop Edinboro, as scores from Mary Uplinger, Haleigh Wright and Garland gave the Fighting Scots an 8-3 lead at intermission.

The Fighting Scots faced a charge from the Rams to begin the second half, as scores from Haley Price and Courtney Matthews cut Edinboro's lead to 8-5 with 24:59 remaining. Both sides were held scoreless for nearly the next five minutes before Olivia Potts broke the silence for Edinboro with a goal to put the Scots up, 9-5, with 20:03 to play in the match. Following a few more scoreless minutes, Shepherd's Haley Price netted a goal to trim Edinboro's lead to 9-6 with 14:52 remaining.

The Edinboro defense stood tall, shutting out the Rams the rest of the way to preserve the win. Overall, the Fighting Scots caused 12 turnovers and gathered 25 ground balls, with Rachel Olson leading the Scots with seven ground balls. Edinboro also shut out Shepherd on all five of its free position shots.

Head coach Caitlin Formato's team will now head down to North Carolina for a contest at Wingate on Wednesday, March 14 at 4:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots will then conclude their trip at Catawba on Friday, March 17 at 3:00 p.m.
