Women’s Lacrosse Dealt 16-6 Defeat by Seton Hill

EDINBORO, Pa. (March 28, 2017) – The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team ran into a high-scoring Seton Hill squad in a Tuesday afternoon PSAC contest at Sox Harrison Stadium. Despite being outshot, 42-17, for the contest and facing a 9-1 first-half deficit, the Fighting Scots got back in the match with four straight goals to cut Seton Hill's lead to four goals. The Griffins, however, went on to score seven of the last eight goals to hand Edinboro a 16-6 defeat. The Boro fell to 1-6 and 0-3 in the PSAC, while SHU improved to 5-4 and 3-2 in the PSAC.
 
Elysia Garland led Edinboro with two goals, while Olivia Potts registered two points on one goal and one assist. Emily Peters, Rachel Olson and Erin Gordon each had one goal on the day. Goalkeeper Paige Skinner, after making 17 saves at Bloomsburg on Saturday, blocked away 15 shots and gathered three ground balls as she fell to 1-6 on the year.
 
Seton Hill's Charlotte Cunningham finished with a match-high nine points on three goals and six assists. Mackenzie Kilduff led the contest with four goals, while recording an assist. Keagan Pontious added four points on three goals and one assist.
 
Seton Hill had 31 shots on goal, while Edinboro finished with 13. The Griffins won 17 draw controls and were 12-for-14 on clear attempts, with the Fighting Scots winning seven draw controls and converting 12-of-21 clear attempts. Edinboro recorded four caused turnovers and recovered 17 ground balls, but committed 19 turnovers. Seton Hill caused six of those turnovers, and collected 23 ground balls.
 
Nicole Nath opened the scoring with a goal at 28:17 remaining in the first half, assisted by Charlotte Cunningham, to put Seton Hill up, 1-0. Garland answered for Edinboro with an equalizer that tied the match up at 1-1 with 27:08 to play in the half. The Griffins went on to score the next eight goals over a span of nine minutes, 20 seconds to break the match open at 9-1 with 15:20 to play before halftime. The Fighting Scots would not go away quietly, as they answered with three straight goals to end the half for a 9-4 score at intermission. Potts scored on a free position with 6:50 to play before halftime, with Olson netting the Boro's third goal of the day with 5:22 to go in the half. Peters tallied her score with 15 seconds to play before the break.
 
The Fighting Scots continued to close in on the Griffins early in the second half when Garland's second score of the day, assisted by Potts, cut Seton Hill's lead to 9-5 with 28:05 left in the contest. Seton Hill responded with seven straight goals, including one free position score from Mackenzie Kilduff, to extend its lead to 16-5 with 6:17 to play in the match. Gordon supplied the last score for Edinboro with nine seconds to play in the contest.
 
Peters, who is second all-time with 105 career goals, needs 20 goals to pass Shannon Rohrich and become Edinboro's all-time career goals leader. The senior midfielder is fifth all-time with 127 career points.
 
Head coach Caitlin Formato's team heads back out on the road for a two-match road trip, beginning with a PSAC match at Lock Haven on Saturday, April 1 at 2:00 p.m.
