Edinboro Falls to Heavy-Scoring, 16th-Ranked Lock Haven

(April 1, 2017) – The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team headed to 16th-ranked Lock Haven on Saturday in hopes of upsetting the Bald Eagles and snapping their 33-match home win streak. The Fighting Scots hung tight with LHU in the early going, tying the match on several occasions. Lock Haven, however, pulled away by using a 14-2 scoring run, including nine straight goals, over the course of both halves as Edinboro fell by a 20-6 decision.
 
The Fighting Scots dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the PSAC. The Bald Eagles, ranked 16th in the latest IWLCA Division II national poll, improved to 6-3 and 3-1, respectively, and extended their home win streak to 34 matches. Edinboro remains winless against Lock Haven, who hold a 10-0 all-time series lead.
 
Emily Peters led the Fighting Scots with three goals. Ranked second all-time at Edinboro with 108 career goals, Peters needs 17 more goals to pass Shannon Rohrich for number one all-time.
Rachel Olson registered a team-high three assists. Elysia Garland had two goals on the day and gathered a team-high three ground balls. Mary Uplinger scored one goal.
 
Rachel Engler, Karli Gilbert and Shannon Bissnette each scored a match-high four goals for Lock Haven, with Bissnette adding seven assists to lead the contest with 11 points. Hayley Kilian finished with seven points on one goal and six assists.
 
Lock Haven outshot Edinboro, 35-15, and held a 20-8 lead in draw controls. The Fighting Scots made 10-of-12 clears, while the Bald Eagles converted on 11-of-12 clear attempts. Both sides scored on 2-of-6 free position chances. The 20 goals are the most allowed by Edinboro this season.
 
The match began as a back-and-forth affair. Lock Haven's Shannon Bissnette's free position goal at 28:53 gave the Bald Eagles the early 1-0 lead, but Edinboro answered right back with a score from Elysia Garland, assisted by Rachel Olson, to tie the contest at 1-1 with 27:41 to play in the first half. Lock Haven regained the lead on a goal by Rachel Engler with 23:32 left in the half, only to have Emily Peters tie the match at 2-2 one minute later on a free position. After two more Bald Eagles goals, Garland came through again with a score at 15:46 to keep the Boro in the match at 4-3.
 
Lock Haven put some distance between them and Edinboro by scoring the next six goals and 11 of the next 13 to take a 15-5 lead at intermission. The Fighting Scots' two goals in this stretch came consecutively. Peters scored at 9:22, assisted by Rachel Olson, followed by a free position goal from Mary Uplinger at 6:42 to cut the Haven's lead to 10-5. The Bald Eagles scored the remaining five goals of the half, including two each from Karli Gilbert and Ashley Gochenaur.
 
The scoring in the second half was more subdued. Edinboro held Lock Haven to just five goals in the closing period, but scored only once. Peters supplied the Fighting Scots' last score of the day on an assist from Olson with 11:55 remaining to make the score 19-6. Gilbert had two of the Haven's second-half goals, with Kate Hooper, Bissnette and Emily Bruie each adding a score.
 
Paige Skinner finished with nine saves, including six in the second half, as she dropped to 1-7 in goal this season. Hannah Houde started the match in net for Lock Haven, with Lauren Marte taking over for the second half. Houde had two saves in the victory, improving to 6-3. Marte had three saves.
 
Head coach Caitlin Formato's team is back in action on Tuesday, April 4 at 11th-ranked Mercyhurst in a PSAC contest, starting at 4:00 p.m.
