Emily Peters Nets Six Goals in 13-11 Defeat at Wheeling Jesuit in Season Opener

WHEELING, W.Va. (March 7, 2017) – The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team opened the 2017 season in strong fashion Tuesday evening at Wheeling Jesuit. Despite rallying for nine second-half goals and Emily Peters scoring a match-high six goals, the Fighting Scots fell, 13-11, to the Cardinals. Edinboro is 0-1 to start the year, while Wheeling Jesuit improved to 2-3 overall.

Peters' six goals are the highest for her career since she scored seven goals against Kutztown as a sophomore on March 27, 2015. Olivia Potts finished with three points on one goal and two assists, while Stephanie Chido tallied two goals. Haleigh Wright had two points on one goal and one assist, while Rachel Olson registered two assists.

Edinboro got off to a great start in the first half, using stifling defense and goals from Wright and Peters to take a 2-0 lead. Wheeling Jesuit answered with seven straight goals, including four from Elizabeth Hales, as they took a 7-2 advantage at intermission. The first four Cardinals goals were scored within a span of just over five-and-a-half minutes, with Hales accounting for three of them.

The Cardinals opened the second half with two goals to take a 9-2 lead with 25:56 left to play. The Fighting Scots refused to go away quietly, netting three of the next four goals to close the gap to 10-5. Mary Uplinger got the Boro's first score of the half off a feed from Wright at 23:48. Peters made the score 9-4 off an assist from Potts with 23:07 remaining. After Hales' fifth goal made the score 10-4, Potts answered for Edinboro with an unassisted goal with 18:44 to go in the match.
