Men’s Tennis Sweeps Kutztown in PSAC Semifinals, Plays Mercyhurst for Fourth Straight League Title Saturday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (April 21, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team got halfway closer to their fourth straight PSAC title on Friday, blanking Kutztown, 5-0, in the league semifinals. The top-seeded Fighting Scots look to seal the deal in the conference championship against two-seed Mercyhurst on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The Lakers defeated Bloomsburg in their semifinals match Friday. The PSAC Tournament is hosted by Bloomsburg University.
 
Head coach Lee Underwood's team, now 15-5 on the year, have now won 28 straight matches against PSAC opponents, including the postseason, dating back to 2014. Edinboro was ranked third this week in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region poll. Kutztown, who came in as the fourth seed in the tournament, ended the year at 3-13.
 
Saturday's contest marks the third straight year the Fighting Scots and Lakers will square off in the PSAC Championship. Both sides even squared off in last year's NCAA Atlantic Region 2 finals match, which Edinboro won by a 5-3 score. It earned the Boro its second sub-region title in three years. Edinboro won this year's regular season meeting by a 5-4 score.
 
The number-one doubles team of Vitor Albanese and Mateus Santos gave Edinboro its first win with an 8-2 victory over Nikolay Kodinov and Gabriel Nogara Souza. The three team of Mauricio Santos and Alexander Anderson followed suit, defeating Josh Carl and Benjamin Kelly, 8-3. Daniel Fernandez and Kevin Mboko provided the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Martin Munoz and D. Nunez Contreras at two. Mauricio Santos and Mateus Santos (no relation) each grabbed straight-set singles victories in the third and fourth spots, respectively, to win the match for Edinboro. The Golden Bears earned just one point between both matches.
