Bloomsburg, Pa. – Both of Edinboro's tennis squads got off to a strong start at the ITA Regionals in Bloomsburg on Thursday.
On the men's side, the Scots had three doubles teams advance to the round of 16. Gerardo Garrido and Hasan Ammar defeated Joaquin Perez and Nikita Safonov of Kutztown 8-2.
Mathis Amsellem and
Leon Grassnickel were 8-4 winners over Pedro Roschel Do Nascimento and Timothe Plaza of West Virginia Wesleyan. After falling behind early
Fabricio Sosa Pons and
Duarte Correia defeated West Virginia State's Heinrich Lindeque and Forkane Lebdi 8-6.
In the singles draw, Amsellem dropped the first set to Tiago Iser of Frostburg State. Amsellem rallied to take the second 6-1 and claimed the tiebreaker 10-1. Grassnickel was a straight set winner in his opening match 6-0, 6-3 over West Virginia Wesleyan's Nascimento. Sosa was the third Scot to advance to the second round 6-0, 6-1 over Juan Pablo Beirana Guzman of West Chester.
The women's duo of
Cecilia Carayol and
Sofia Benito were 8-0 winners over Mulema Mbapeh and Christina Karagrigoriou of West Virginia State.
Benito opened against Annemiek Sterk of IUP. She won the first set 7-5 before dropping the second 6-2. In the tiebreak, Benito claimed a 10-5 victory to advance to Friday's second round. Carayol also moved on to Friday defeating Lia-Sophie Seele of Bloomsburg 6-4, 6-3.
The Scots are back in action on Friday with the second round of ITAs in Bloomsburg.
