Edinboro Ranked 30th in College Football America 2017 Top 30

EDINBORO, Pa. – College Football America 2017 Yearbook has released its 2017 Division II preseason Top 30, with Edinboro earning a national ranking. The Fighting Scots are ranked 30th and are three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams in the rankings.

All three teams are from the Western Division. California(Pa.), the 2016 PSAC champions, is ranked 11th, while Indiana(Pa.) is 20th. The two teams were ranked one-two earlier this week in the PSAC coaches preseason poll, but in reverse order. IUP is the preseason favorite, with Cal second.

This marks the second preseason poll to rank the Fighting Scots. Edinboro was earlier picked 16th in the 2017 Street and Smith's Preseason Division II Top 25 Poll.

Ferris State is ranked No. 1 in the College Football America 2017 Yearbook  Division II preseason Top 30. Defending Division II national champion Northwest Missouri State is No. 2, with Shepherd ranked third, Grand Valley State fourth, and Texas A&M-Commerce number five.

Rounding out the Top 10 are No. 6 North Alabama, No. 7 Harding, No. 8 Emporia State, No. 9 Sioux Falls and No. 10 LIU Post.

Edinboro recorded the largest turnaround in NCAA Division II history, going from 0-11 in 2015 to the 9-2 mark in 2016, with the two losses to NCAA playoff teams California(Pa.) and Indiana(Pa.). They actually finished seventh in the final Super Region One rankings but were denied an NCAA postseason bid due to the NCAA's earned access policy.

Edinboro produced its dramatic turnaround thanks to a high-powered offense and opportunistic defense. The Fighting Scots scored 40-or-more points in a school-record seven games, with two games of 60-or-more points. Edinboro averaged 41.5 ppg., good for third in the PSAC and tenth in Division II.

The defense, meanwhile, finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in Division II in sacks.

One of the architects of that defense was Wayne Bradford. The long-time assistant coach, who has served most of his career as Edinboro's defensive coordinator, was appointed interim head coach in late March after Justin Lustig left to take an assistant coaching position at Syracuse.

The Bradford Era will officially begin on Saturday, September 2 when the Fighting Scots host Lake Erie.
