Edinboro Hosts Slippery Rock in Season, PSAC Debut

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's soccer team will open its 2017 season on Thursday, August 31, hosting Slippery Rock. The match gets underway at 6 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium, and pits the Fighting Scots against one of their biggest nemesis over the years. It also represents the PSAC opener for both teams.

Edinboro and Slippery Rock have squared off 29 times over the years, with the Fighting Scots managing just four wins and seven ties. The contest pits two of last year's PSAC playoff teams, with Edinboro earning the third seed and The Rock seeded sixth.

Both teams have enjoyed great success in recent years. Edinboro has made the PSAC Tournament the last seven years, with NCAA Division II playoff berths in five of the last six years. A year ago, Edinboro posted a 13-5-1 record, winning 10 or more contests for the xx straight year.

Slippery Rock, meanwhile, was 10-8-1 last season, but 10-5-1 in PSAC play. The Rock has compiled 21 consecutive winning seasons, a streak which ranks seventh all-time in NCAA Division II. SRU has also registered 19 straight years with at least 10 wins as well as seven NCAA tournament appearances in the last 12 seasons.

Edinboro was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC Preseason Poll, while Slippery Rock was voted eighth. The Fighting Scots are led by head coach Gary Kagiavas, who has led Edinboro since its inception in 1996. Kagiavas topped the 200-win mark a year ago and enters his 22nd season as head coach with a 206-160-34 record. That ranks 21st among active Division II coaches in victories.

???????Edinboro returns five of its top six scorers from last year, with six starters coming back. Ashley Mutkus tied for the scoring lead in 2016 with 10 goals and 4 assists for 24 points. The senior forward enters the year ranked tenth in career goals with 23, and 11th in career goals with 56. She was a second team All-PSAC honoree in 2016, along with earning second team NSCAA All-Atlantic region accolades.

Mutkus is one of four returning All-PSAC performers. Senior defender/midfielder Coleen Brodman, who earned second team honors last year, is expected to anchor the defense. Halle Hammer, a junior midfielder, was a third team selection after finishing with a goal and 2 assists.

Sarah Baskey returns for her third season in goal after tying her own record for wins in a season with 13 last year. The senior finished with a 13-5-1 record and a 0.78 GAA with seven shutouts. A third team All-PSAC pick in 2016, she ranks second in career victories with 26 and fourth in career shutouts with 12.

Danielle Chatten was enjoying an outstanding freshman season before going down with a season-ending injury. She started 10 of the 11 matches she played in, and still finished third on the team in scoring with 3 goals and 6 assists for 12 points.

Slippery Rock is in its third season under head coach Jessica Griggs, who owns a 23-14-2 record in two seasons. She took over at SRU in 2015 after serving for one season as the head coach at Division III Northland College. A year ago, she guided The Rock to a 10-8-1 record. SRU was 10-5-1 in league play, good for fifth in the PSAC.

Two All-PSAC performers return in seniors Tess Keeley and Maddy Tietski. Keeley, a midfielder, was a second team selection a year ago and is a two-time All-PSAC honoree. She was tied for second on the team in points and was third in goals, ending the year with eight points on three goals and two assists. She ranks 17th in career assists with 12. Tietski is also a midfielder who has started 39 games over her last two years. She also totaled eight points on four goals. She was a third team All-PSAC choice.

???????Edinboro returns to action less than 48 hours later, traveling to Shippensburg for a 12:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, September 2.
