Fighting Scots Rally From Late Two-Goal Deficit to Tie Slippery Rock, 2-2, in Season Opener

EDINBORO, Pa. – In most instances, Edinboro women's soccer head coach Gary Kagiavas would not be pleased with a tie. But that might not be the case in Thursday night's 2-2 tie with Slippery Rock in the 2017 season and PSAC opener for both teams. The match turned out to be a typical Edinboro vs. Slippery Rock contest, as it marked the eighth time the two teams have tied and the ninth contest to go into overtime.

This one hardly looked like it was headed for overtime after Slippery Rock took a 2-0 early in the second half on Julianna Esposito's goal in the 62nd minute. The Rock entered halftime with a 1-0 advantage when Madison Johnson scored off a pass from Brooke Testa.

Edinboro finally came alive when Danielle Chatten fired a shot past SRU goalkeeper Kylie Downs from 15 yards out off a feed from redshirt freshman Rebecca Manns at the 78:40 mark. The sophomore's goal cut the deficit to 2-1 and energized a young
Edinboro squad that started four freshmen and played six more.

Less than six minutes later, the Fighting Scots forged a 2-2 tie on freshman Sarah Reidy's first career goal. Ashley Mutkus' corner kick went past the goal to Coleen Brodman, who kept the ball inbounds, then passed in front of the goal to Reidy, who redirected the ball into the net at 84:27.

The two teams would battle through a pair of ten-minute overtime sessions without a score, with Slippery Rock owning the best two opportunities. Madison Thierry misfired on a shot from close six minutes into the first overtime. In the second overtime, Taylor Gunn had an open net but fired the ball over the post from 20 yards out.

Slippery Rock would hold a 19-15 advantage in shots, including 5-2 in the overtime periods. Senior Sarah Baskey was up to the task in goal, however, as she recorded nine saves. Downs finished with five saves for Slippery Rock.

Edinboro returns in action in less than 48 hours, playing at Shippensburg in another PSAC contest on Saturday, September 2 at 12:30 p.m.
