SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Edinboro University volleyball team (8-1) ran their winning streak to five Friday night, defeating American International College (6-4) on the road. The Fighting Scots took down the Elite 8 team from a year ago claiming the 26-24, 21-25, 25-27, 25-21, 15-13 win in the first of two matches between the schools this weekend.
The two teams split the first two sets in a back and forth match with the Fighting Scots taking the first 26-24. The third set more of the same as neither team could take more than a two point lead on the other. Freshman
Cierah Jackson tallied eight of her 24
kills during the set. But the Yellow Jackets to would take the 2-1 sets lead with a kill by Diva Rivas.
Edinboro came back in the fourth claiming the set 25-19 on a 5-1 run to forcing the deciding frame.
The final set saw short runs by both teams. American International went up 13-11 before Junior
Hannah Cantrill would even up the score with a kill and a service ace. A kill by Senior
Challen Litwiler would put the Yellow Jacks up against the wall and forced a ball handling error by Rivas which gave Edinboro the 3-2 win.
Jackson, Litwiler and Cantrill all finished with double-digit kills. It was the second time this season that Jackson recorded 24 kills in a match having done so against Bentley in a 3-1 last weekend. Senior
Sydney Trathen led the defense for Edinboro talling 12 digs, one block solo and a block assist..
American International was led by Rivas with a match-high 26 kills. Annie Boele added 15. Dolores Kopren picked up a match high 50 assists while Andrea Dillon added four blocks.
The two squads will meet again Saturday at 10 a.m. before Edinboro concludes the weekend with a 12 noon start against Southern New Hampshire University.
