Mutkus Scores Twice as Fighting Scots Post 4-0 Shutout Over Roberts Wesleyan

EDINBORO, Pa. – Ashley Mutkus scored a pair of goals to lead the Edinboro women's soccer team to their third straight win on Wednesday night, as the Fighting Scots posted a 4-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan at Sox Harrison Stadium. The non-conference victory leaves the Fighting Scots at 4-2-1, while Roberts Wesleyan fell to 1-5-1.

The Fighting Scots matched their season high of four goals for the second straight match, as they have now scored 11 goals over the last three contests after scoring six goals in the first four matches. The four goals came against a Roberts Wesleyan team that had allowed just seven goals in six contests.

Mutkus got the scoring going when the senior forward scored on a breakaway off a long pass from Sarah Reidy, firing the ball from the middle of the box into the left corner of the goal. The goal came at 16:31 into the first half.

Kara Kern boosted the lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal in the final minute of the first half. The freshman sent a long shot from the left win over the head of goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel for her first career goal. That gave Edinboro a 2-0 lead at the half, as the Fighting Scots held a 10-1 lead in shots over the first 45 minutes.

Edinboro would score two more goals in the second half. Mutkus accounted for the first at 53:18, scoring her seventh goal of the season as she took a pass from Rebecca Manns, faked out a defender and scored from the left side from 15 yards out. She has now moved into a tie for sixth place in career goals with 30, and has 71 career points, tied for eighth all-time.

Manns assisted on the final goal, as well, giving the sophomore forward five assists for the season. She fed freshman Jill Jones, who would score her first career goal from 10 yards out into the right side of the net.

Edinboro held a 14-4 advantage in shots, with Sarah Baskey finishing with three saves. The senior goalkeeper registered her second shutout of the season and 14th of her career. She now has 30 career wins.

Edinboro returns to action on Sunday, September 24, hosting third-ranked Kutztown in a PSAC contest. The match gets underway at 1 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
