Edinboro Puts Scare into Third-Ranked Kutztown Before Falling 4-1

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's soccer team gave third-ranked Kutztown a scare before the Golden Bears pulled away for a 4-1 PSAC win on Sunday afternoon at a steamy Sox Harrison Stadium. The loss snapped Edinboro's three-game winning streak as the Fighting Scots are now 4-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in PSAC action. Kutztown, riding one of the longest winning streaks in school history, is 8-0-0 and 6-0-0, respectively.

Edinboro had an early opportunity to take a quick lead, but Ashley Mutkus' shot was wide in the opening minutes. Kutztown would manage the lone goal of the first half when Kate Martin's shot was deflected by an Edinboro defender into the net with 8:16 gone in the match.

The Golden Bears boosted the lead to 2-0 at the 47:10 mark on a breakaway goal by Randi Smith off a long pass from Martin.

The Fighting Scots responded just over four minutes later at 51:41, closing the gap to 2-1 while scoring just the fourth goal allowed by Kutztown all year. Danielle Chatten scored her fourth goal of the year on a shot from 25 yards out over the head of goalkeeper Jenna Bracken off a pass from Rebecca Manns. Manns now has a team-high five assists.

Edinboro nearly tied the match at 2-2 on a header by Coleen Brodman off a corner kick, but Bracken made a spectacular leaping grab. Less than two minutes after that save, at 59:28, Kutztown boosted the lead to 3-1 on a breakaway goal by Alyssa Ryan. Boro goalkeeper came far out in front of the net to make a diving safe of a shot by Emily Zwiercan, but Ryan gathered in the rebound and lofted a long shot into an open net.

Edinboro would have two more excellent opportunities to score, with both Chatten and Halle Hammer hitting the crossbar with shots. Kutztown added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute as Maddie Mohr scored an unassisted goal after gathering in an Edinboro turnover.

Kutztown held a slight 14-13 lead in shots, with Baskey registering six saves before giving way to Elizabeth Stender with ten minutes remaining. Bracken had a pair of saves.

Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, September 27 hosting local and PSAC rival Mercyhurst at 6 p.m.
