Chatten, Mutkus Score as Edinboro Battles Mercyhurst to 2-2 Tie in Two Overtimes

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro and Mercyhurst women's soccer teams battled for 110 minutes on Wednesday night at Sox Harrison Stadium, with the end result a 2-2 tie in two overtimes. The Fighting Scots are now 4-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in PSAC action, while the Lakers are now 2-3-3 and 2-3-2, respectively.
 
Edinboro kept a streak alive of not losing to Mercyhurst in the last eight meetings, with seven wins and now a tie. However, the Fighting Scots dominated the action and could very well have come away with a victory. Edinboro outshot Mercyhurst, 26-8, and the shots were 6-2 in favor of the Fighting Scots in overtime.
 
Despite being outshot 7-3 in the first half, it was Mercyhurst with a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes. Laia Santos scored her first goal of the season at 17:22, when she took a crossing pass from in front of the net from Maia Russo and hit a shot from the box into the right side of the net.
 
Edinboro would come back with a pair of goals in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. The first was courtesy of Danielle Chatten at 58:37. Chatten's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Alex Root, with Root blasting a free kick from midfield to Chatten, who gathered it in and beat Mercyhurst goalkeeper Vilde Wold from ten yards out.
 
Ashley Mutkus gavc the Fighting Scots a 2-1 lead with 77:38 gone, taking a long pass from Rebecca Mann, and scoring from ten yards out into the left side of the net. It was Mutkus' team-leading eighth goal of the season and 31st of her career. The senior is now tied for fifth place in career goals, and moved into sole possession of eighth place in career points with 73.
 
Unfortunately for Edinboro, Mercyhurst would knot the score at 2-2 with a goal at 83:02. Anja Korte accounted for the goal, her third of the season, as she fired a long shot into the back right corner of the net off a pass from Maggie Hilton.
 
Neither team would score in the two overtime periods. Edinboro had several strong opportunities to deposit the winning goal but was unable to do so, while Sarah Baskey made a save on a Mercyhurst shot from close in. Baskey would end the night with five saves, while Wold had 11.
 
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, September 30 playing at West Chester. That Golden Rams bring a 5-2-1 record into the contest.
