Cantrill's Double-Double Helps Lead Edinboro To 3-0 Sweep of Mercyhurst

  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team swept host Mercyhurst, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon to earn a split of their weekend matches. The Fighting Scots pulled away early in the first set for a 25-15 win before the Lakers kept it close in the second and third sets but fell, 26-24 and 25-23, respectively. Edinboro improves to 11-10 overall and 4-7 in the PSAC Northwest. Mercyhurst fell to 8-16 overall and 3-8 in the PSAC Northwest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro opened up the first set with a service ace from freshman Alicia Eldredge.
  • The Lakers would tie up the score at 1-1 and 2-2 before the Fighting Scots went on a 13-3 run to take a commanding 16-6 lead.
  • The closest the Lakers got within was with Edinboro leading 24-15. A Mercyhurst service error gave the Fighting Scots a 25-15 set one win.
  • In the early part of the second set, neither team could hold more than a point lead over the other before Edinboro used a 10-2 run to pull ahead 15-8.
  • The Lakers pulled within three at 16-13 to force an Edinboro timeout.
  • Mercyhurst used a run of their own to tie the score up at 19-19 before taking a 21-20 lead, their first since 6-5 in the set.
  • The Fighting Scots regrouped and won the next four points before the Lakers tied it back up at 24-24 and forced extra points.
  • Kills by freshman Sally Sterkel and Cierah Jackson on the next two points gave Edinboro the 26-24 set two win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Lakers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set before Edinboro tied it up at 5-5 with a kill by senior Megan Screptock.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the set with the biggest lead at 18-15 I favor of Edinboro.
  • With the Fighting Scots leading 24-21, Mercyhurst used a pair of kills to pull within one 24-23 and forced an Edinboro timeout.
  • A Laker service error sealed the 25-23 set win and sweep, 3-0.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Senior Hannah Cantrill recorded her first double-double of the season with a 12 kill, 11 dig performance against Mercyhurst. She is the fourth Fighting Scot to have a double-double this season.
  • Molly Breier led the Fighting Scots for the second straight match with 20 digs against the Lakers. She also chipped in with three assists. The sophomore had 21 digs on Friday against No. 23 Gannon.
  • Breier was one of three Fighting Scots in double-figure digs. Joining her were Screptock and Cantrill with 13 and 11, respectively.
  • Eldredge dished out 31 assists for the match. It marked the 10th time this season that she has reached 30+ assists.
  • On the defensive side of the net, Sterkel led the way with a block solo and pair of block assists. Sophomore Paige Morris and Cantrill each had two block assists as well.
  • Edinboro led the Lakers in kills (41-34), attack percentage (.248-.104), assists (38-31), service aces (4-2), and digs (65-55). The two teams both had a total of five blocks on the day.
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro returns home next weekend when they host Lock Haven and Bloomsburg. The match against the Bald Eagles gets underway on Friday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. with the Huskies visiting the next day, Saturday, October 20 with a special Saturday start time of 7:00 p.m.
  • The Fighting Scots defeated Lock Haven earlier this season, 3-0, in a non-conference match up. Led by Sterkel's 11 kills, five different Fighting Scots had at least five kills win the sweep.
  • Bloomsburg is a first-year program and holds a 5-15 overall record and a 1-10 record in the PSAC Central.
