Fighting Scots Start Weekend With 3-1 Win Over Lock Haven

Cantrill, Eldredge record double-doubles in the victory

  • The Short Story: For the second time this season, the Edinboro volleyball team defeated visiting Lock Haven. The Fighting Scots picked up the 3-1 win over the Bald Eagles 25-15, 25-14, 20-25, 25-19. Senior Hannah Cantrill and freshman Alicia Eldredge notched their second and third double-double of the season, respectively while sophomore Molly Breier had a career-high 26 digs in the win. Edinboro improved to 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the PSAC Northwest while Lock Haven fell to 8-13 overall and 3-9 in the PSAC Central
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro never trailed in the first set, pulling ahead 8-2, thanks in part to a pair of kills by Cierah Jackson, to force a Lock Haven timeout.
  • The closest the Bald Eagles go was with the Fighting Scots leading 21-14.
  • Edinboro closed out the first set 25-15 with a Megan Screptock service ace and kills by Hannah Cantrill and Paige Morris.
  • The beginning of the second set was much like the first with the Fighting Scots jumping out to a 7-2 lead.
  • Edinboro would extend their lead to 10-4 before the Bald Eagles pulled within three at 11-8 and forcing a Fighting Scot timeout.
  • Two kills each from Cantrill and Sally Sterkel coupled with a ball handling error by Lock Haven boosted Edinboro's lead back up to 16-9 and it was the Bald Eagles who called a timeout.
  • A pair of block assists by Morris and Alicia Eldredge helped seal the 25-14 set two win.
  • Lock Haven pulled away midway through the fourth set with a 7-1 to take a 12-7 lead. Edinboro would respond by pulling within one thanks to some offense by both Eldredge and Cantrill.
  • Two Fighting Scot attack errors gave the Bald Eagles the 25-20 set three win, pulling Lock Haven within one at 2-1.
  • Edinboro only trailed once in the fourth set at 4-3 before going pulling ahead 10-6. The Bald Eagles used a small run to pull close with the Fighting Scots at 11-10.
  • The score would be tied twice midway through the set before Edinboro pulled ahead 22-18 and Lock Haven taking their final timeout.
  • A kill by Sterkel sealed Edinboro's sixth-straight win over the Bald Eagles, 3-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sally Sterkel and Hannah Cantrill led the offense for Edinboro with a match-high 12 kills each. Sterkel committed only two attack errors for a .435 attack percentage while Cantrill tallied her second double-double of the season with 16 digs.
  • Alicia Eldredge recorded her third double-double of the season with 42 assists and 10 digs in the win. It marked the sixth time this season that she recorded 40-or-more assists in a match.
  • Molly Breier set a new career-high 26 digs against the Bald Eagles. It was the third-straight match with 20+ digs and 14th time with double-figure scoops.
  • Edinboro had nine service aces led by Eldredge's three.
  • Edinboro had a large lead over Lock Haven in kills (53-36) while also topping the Bald Eagles in assists (49-31), service aces (9-2), digs (76-72), and blocks (6-3).
  • The Fighting Scots out hit Lock Haven in all three sets they won and for the match (.193-.122).
  • Edinboro now leads the all-time series with Lock Haven 30-29.
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro will wrap up the weekend with a home match on Saturday, October 20th against Bloomsburg. The match is scheduled for a special Saturday start time of 7:00 PM
  • This is the first meeting between the PSAC opponents as Bloomsburg is a first-year volleyball program.
