Edinboro Sweeps Bloomsburg, 3-0, In First Ever Meeting Saturday Night

  • The Short Story: In their first ever meeting, the Edinboro volleyball team picked up the 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-16, 25-20) over visiting Bloomsburg on Saturday evening. Alicia Eldredge had her second-straight and her seventh overall double-double in the win. The Fighting Scots improve to 13-10 overall and 6-7 in the PSAC Northwest. The Huskies fall to 5-17 overall and 1-12 in the PSAC Central.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro never trailed in the first set against the Huskies jumping out to an 8-2 lead thanks in part to a pair of kills from sophomore Cierah Jackson.
  • The Fighting Scots extended the lead late in the set to 20-8. Bloomsburg never got closer than nine with Edinboro leading 24-15 before the Fighting Scots finished off the first set with a kill by senior Megan Screptock.
  • Edinboro started off the second set with six-straight points led by two kills from freshman Sally Sterkel.
  • Still early in the set, the Huskies pulled within three at 10-7 with an Edinboro service error and never got closer than at 13-10 before Edinboro pulled away.
  • The Fighting Scots won three of the final four points with two of Eldredge's four kills in the set and a block assist by Sterkel and senior Hannah Cantrill. Edinboro won the second set, 25-16.
  • The Huskies won three of the first four points in the third set with two Edinboro errors. The two teams went back and forth with Bloomsburg leading 5-4.
  • The Fighting Scots went on a 5-0 run capped by a block solo from sophomore Paige Morris. The Huskies used a 4-1 run to pull within two at 11-9.
  • A kill by Sterkel followed by an Edinboro service error brought Bloomsburg the closest they would get the rest of the set at 12-10.
  • The Fighting Scots won two of the three final points with kills from Cantrill and Sterkel to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Alicia Eldredge had her second-straight and seventh overall double-double against the Huskies. It marked her first to include kills as she finished with 11 kills and 31 assists. It also was a career-high in kills for the freshman.
  • Eldredge was one of five Fighting Scots with 5-or-more kills. She was followed by Cierah Jackson's 9 and Hannah Cantrill and Sally Sterkel's eight apiece.
  • Megan Screptock finished with five kills, seven assists and 16 digs. The senior is second on the team in digs this season with 245 behind only Molly Breier's 266.
  • Along with Screptock's 16 digs, Breier had 15 herself in the sweep.
  • Edinboro never hit below .278 in any set on its way to a .299 attack percentage for the match. The Fighting Scots had a .278 in the first set followed by a .324 in the second and .294 in the third.
  • The Fighting Scots nearly had doubled up the kills over the Huskies with a 45-23 advantage for the match. Edinboro also led Bloomsburg in assists (42-20), service aces (5-2), digs (65-44) and blocks (8-5).
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro will hit the road next weekend for a pair of matches against PSAC Central division opponents. The Fighting Scots will play at Pitt-Johnstown on Friday, October 26 at 7:00 pm before playing at Shippensburg on Saturday, October 27 at 1:00 pm.
  • Pitt-Johnstown split their matches on the weekend falling at #21 Gannon 3-0 before picking up a 3-1 win over Mercyhurst.
  • The Raiders dropped bots of their weekend matches falling 3-1 to Mercyhurst and 3-0 to Gannon.
