Fletcher Goes the Distance to Extend Edinboro's Winning Streak at Clarion

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Edinboro 14, Clarion 7
  • Records:  Edinboro (6-3, 3-3 PSAC West), Clarion (4-5, 2-4 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Clarion, Pa. -- Memorial Stadium
  • The Short Story:  The day didn't start very well for standout running back Walter Fletcher, but it certainly ended on a great note. The redshirt junior running back scored on an 80-yard run with 7:39 remaining in the game to provide the winning points in a 14-7 win at Clarion on a rainy and cool afternoon. Edinboro's other score came on a miracle completion from Jarrod Kellar to Ta'Nauz Gregory for a 33-yard touchdown pass. One week after rushing for a school-record 328 yards, Fletcher matched his career-high with 33 carries for 243 yards. The effort helped Edinboro win for the third straight time in the long-time rivalry, and for the ninth straight time at Memorial Stadium.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started under horrible conditions, with heavy rain and 41 degree temperatures. The play was definitely impacted as the teams combined for three turnovers in the first three minutes. On the very first play from scrimmage, Jarrod Kellar completed a 35-yard pass to James Clark to the Clarion 30. The Fighting Scots would reach the 22, but Walter Fletcher would suffer the first lost fumble of his career with Clarion taking over at its own eight.
  • Clarion's first play from scrimmage scrimmage resulted in a school-record for Zuril Hendrick. The senior cornerback intercepted Jeff Clemens' pass and returned it six yards to the Clarion 16. It was Hendrick's 20th career interecption, tying the school record held by Chris Avery.
  • Three plays later the Fighting Scots were at the Clarion 6, but Fletcher was once again stripped of the ball with the Golden Eagles taking over at the five.
  • A 26-yard punt return by Ta'Nauz Gregory had the Fighting Scots back in scoring position at the Clarion 16. They would have to settle for a 33-yard field goal attempt by Jake Monroe. However, the snap of the wet pigskin was a lhigh, and holder Andrew Tomko was forced to scramble, eventually throwing an incomplete pass.
  • Edinboro would finally get on the score board after holding Clarion on downs at the EU 24 midway through the second quarter. The Fighting Scots put together a nine-play, 76-yard drive that featured plenty of Fletcher. The redshirt junior running back five times for 22 yards and added a 13-yard reception on a 3rd-and-8 play. Facing a 2nd-and-7 at the Clarion 33, the snap dribbled back to Kellar. The redshirt junior quarterback was able to gather it in and heave it down the left sideline. The ball looked like it would be intercepted by a Clarion defender inside the ten yard-line. Instead, it was tipped by the Golden Eagle, with Gregory gathering it in at his shoe tops at the four and going in for an improbable six points with 4:08 left in the second quarter.
  • Clarion responded with a seven-play, 68-yard drive that was aided by an Edinboro unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a targeting penalty to knot the score at 7-7 with 1:08 left in the half. The targeting penalty gave Clarion the ball at the EU 10, and on the next play Mylique McGriff scored on a 10-yard touchdown.
  • The lone scoring opportunity in the third quarter was a Clarion drive that started at their own 44. With McGriff carrying five straight times for 43 yards, the Golden Eagles would eventually reach the EU 12. James Metzgar, who had made 9-of-10 field games, came in to attempt a 29-yard field goal. It was blocked by DT Derek Dorr.
  • After reaching Clarion territory just once in their first four possessions of the second half, the Fighting Scots took over at their own 10 with 8:52 remaining in the game. A Fletcher run netted two yards, and Kellar found Andre' Dowdell for eight yards and a first down at the 20. Fletcher then burst 80 yards on the next play, starting off right guard, then cutting the run back to the left and outrunning several Clarion defenders down the left sideline for the game-winning touchdown with 7:39 remaining.
  • Clarion would have the ball one more time, with the Edinboro defense stepping up. Starting at their own 33, the Golden Eagles got a pair of first downs to move to the EU 36. The drive stalled thanks to a sacks by Ethan Upperco and Derek Dorr for seven yards, followed by another one by Connor Kelly for six yards.
  • Clarion punted, with Edinboro taking over at its own 15 with three minutes remaining. Four straight carries by Fletcher netted 30 yards and a pair of first downs to run out the clock.
