THE GAME FACTS

  • Records:  Edinboro (6-4, 3-4 PSAC West), Indiana(Pa.) (8-2, 5-2 PSAC West)

  • The Short Story:  The Fighting Scots battled toe-to-toe with the 22nd-ranked Crimson Hawks, a team which reached the Division II semifinals a year ago. In the end, IUP was able to complete one scoring drive in the fourth quarter, while Edinboro's attempt to rally came up just short. After Walter Fletcher's one-yard touchdown run knotted the score at 6-6 midway through the third quarter, IUP drove 78 yards in 10 plays for the winning score with 7:09 to play. Justice Evans accounted for the winning touchdown on a one-yard run. Edinboro would drive down to the IUP 8 but the drive came to an end on an interception on fourth down with 17 seconds remaining.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second straight week, conditions were not conducive to passing the ball a great deal, although they were better than last week at Clarion. That included 41 degree temperatures and intermittent heavy rain, mixed with an occasional dose of sunshine.
  • Edinboro faced adversity after the very first play of the game, as Jarrod Kellar's tipped pass led to an interception, with IUP taking over at the EU 25. As it did throughout the day, the Edinboro defense stepped up and held the Crimson hawks to a field goal attempt. Dillon Sarka's 38-yard attempt was no good after hitting the left post.
  • Fueled by seven straight runs by Walter Fletcher, the Fighting Scots drove from their own 41 to the IUP 18. A penalty pushed the ball back five yards, and Jake Monroe's 40-yard field goal attempt was blocked late in the first quarter.
  • IUP would get on the board on the following possession, driving 52 yards on eight plays. The big play was a 31-yard run by Samir Bullock. The Crimson Hawks would reach the EU 22 before Sarka came in and kicked a 39-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter.
  • The Crimson Hawks would add another field goal following a three-and-out by Edinboro. Andrew Tomko's 47-yard punt pinned IUP back at its own 15 yardline. A 43-yard pass play from Lenny Williams to Dom McNeil gave IUP a first down at the EU 40. The Crimson Hawks would reach the Edinboro 16 before Maurice Sims sacked Williams for a 10-yard loss to force another field goal attempt. Sarka came in and converted from 43 yards out with 9:05 remaining in the second quarter to complete a nine-play, 59-yard drive.
  • Edinboro would have one other scoring opportunity in the second quarter after IUP grabbed the 6-0 lead. The Crimson Hawks attempted an onside kick following the field goal, but it went out of bounds and Edinboro would start at the IUP 48. facing a 3rd-and-12, James Clark made a spectacular catch while laying on his back for a 32-yard completion from Kellar. Two Fletcher runs moved the ball to the 12, but an incomplete pass was followed by a sack to halt the drive.
  • Edinboro would knot the score at 6-6 on its first possession of the third quarter, aided by an IUP miscue. Nico Ruiz fumbled the snap on a punt attempt, and he was never able to get the punt off, with Kahlil Jackson coming up with the loose ball at the IUP 38. What followed was a heavy does of Fletcher. The redshirt junior running back carried the ball on seven of the eight plays in the 38-yard scoring drive. After running for seven yards down to the one on 3rd-and-2, Fletcher scored his 16th rushing touchdown of the season with 8:00 remaining in the third quarter. Monroe's extra point attempt hit the left upright, ending a string of 33 consecutive successful PATs.
  • After three straight punts by the two teams, IUP took over at its own 22 with 12:01 remaining following a 42-yard punt by Tomko. The Crimson Hawks would put together a 10-play, 78-yard drive that featured plenty of Williams, one of the top players in the PSAC. The senior quarterback completed three-of-four passes for 38 yards, along with a 17-yard run. His last completion covered 17 yards to McNeil, and gave the Crimson Hawks 1st-and-goal at the one. Justice Evans scored on the next play with 7:09 to play to give IUP a 13-6 lead.
  • Edinboro's next possession resulted in a second interception, but the Fighting Scots' defense threw Williams for a loss of three on a run by DeAndre' Dowdell, followed by a sack by Derek Dorr to force an IUP punt.
  • Edinboro took over at its own 38 with 3:18 left to play. The Fighting Scots converted once o third down and once on fourth down to move deep into IUP territory. Kellar and Clark combined on a 13-yard pass on 3rd-and-9 down to the IUP 34. Then facing 4th-and-13, a Kellar to A.J. Turner connection for 25 yards gave the Scots a first down at the IUP 12 with less than a minute remaining. Following an incomplete pass, Fletcher moved the ball to the eight with a four-yard run. Kellar's pass was incomplete on third down, and on fourth down, Damon Lloyd deflected his pass and it was intercepted by Obi Anyatonwu at the four with 17 seconds left.
