Fighting Scots Fall In Final Road Match of Season to Shippensburg, 3-1

THE RUNDOWN – EDINBORO at Shippensburg

  • Final Score: Shippensburg 3, Edinboro 1
  • Set Scores: 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22
  • Records: Edinboro (13-12, 6-9 PSAC Northwest), Pitt-Johnstown (22-5, 12-3 PSAC Central)
  • Location: Shippensburg, Pa.
  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team dropped their final road match of the season to Shippensburg, 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22). The Fighting Scots dropped the first set before rebounding to tie up the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 set two win. The Raiders closed out the match winning the third and fourth sets. Edinboro falls to 13-12 overall and 6-9 in the PSAC Northwest. Shippensburg improved to 22-5 overall and 12-3 in the PSAC Central.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set went back and forth early with the score tied at 11-11. The Raiders won the next three points to take a 14-11 lead with a pair of service aces.
  • A Shippensburg ball handling error and a service ace by Sally Sterkel pulled the Fighting Scots within five at 23-15 before the Raiders closed out the set with a service ace of their own.
  • The early part of the second set was much like the first with Shippensburg holding a slim 10-9 lead. A kill by Cierah Jackson from Molly Breier and a Jackson service ace tied the score up at 12-12.
  • Neither team could score more than two points in a row with Raider attack error to pull the score even again at 21-21. Edinboro took its first lead of the set with a kill by Paige Morris from Alicia Eldredge, forcing the Raiders to call a time out with the Fighting Scots leading 22-21.
  • An ace and kills by Jackson and Morris sealed the second set with 25-22 and tied the match up at a set apiece.
  • Edinboro started off the third set with a 6-5 lead early.Shippensburg used a three point run to take a 10-7 lead capped by a service ace.
  • The Fighting Scots pulled within three at 19-16 thanks to a kill by Sterkel, however the Raiders won the final six points of the set and retook the match lead with a 25-16 set three win.
  • Shippensburg led by as many as six midway through the fourth set at 15-9. The Fighting Scots used 6-1 including a pair of Raider attack errors to get within one at 16-15.
  • Another run by the Fighting Scots got Edinboro within one at 22-21 before Shippensburg stretched the lead to two on the next point.
  • A kill by Jackson once again pulled the Fighting Scots within one before the Raiders won the fourth set 25-22.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Megan Screptock recorded her sixth double-double of the season in the match (12 kills, 13 digs). Her last one came against Indiana(Pa.) with 11 kills and 13 digs.
  • Cierah Jackson led the offense for the Fighting Scots. The sophomore had 17 kills against the Raiders. The team leader in kills now has 283 for the season, averaging 3.41 kills per set.
  • Alicia Eldredge had a team high 33 assists on the afternoon. She has led Edinboro in assists every match this season recording 30+ assists 14 of 25 matches, including the past five.
  • Both Screptock and Molly Breier had a team-high in digs. Both recorded 13 scoops while Jordan Van Oss also reached double-figure digs (11).
  • Paige Morris led the defensive effort at the net with five total blocks (three solo, two assists). Both Sally Sterkel and Tatum Hosie also chipped in with a three block assists each while Jackson and Sarah Armahizer each added one.  
  • Edinboro led the Raiders in kills (50-49), assists (48-45), and service aces (9-8).
NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
  • Edinboro returns home for their final three matches of the regular season. Slippery Rock visits McComb Fieldhouse on Tuesday, October 30 for a 6:00 PM start. The Fighting Scots fell 3-0 to The Rock earlier this season.
  • Next weekend local rivals Mercyhurst and Gannon come to Edinboro. On Friday, November 2, the Lakers come to town before Gannon visits McComb on Saturday, November 3. Both matches are scheduled for 6:00 pm.
