Simpson Leads Late Surge as Edinboro Opens Season with 81-63 Win over Thiel

  • The Short Story: Edinboro made it 19 straight wins over Thiel in the season opener, but as usual, it didn't come easy. The Fighting Scots held a nine-point lead at the half at 40-31, and built the lead to 11 points in the second half, only to see the Tomcats close the gap to a point at 48-47 with 13:13 remaining. Edinboro's lead was still just five points at 59-54 before the Fighting Scots scored ten straight points to blow the game open at 69-54 with 6:31 to play. Thiel never got closer than 12 points the rest of the night. Sophomore Jaryn Simpson paced the Fighting Scots with career-highs of 22 points and 6 assists, leading four players in double digits.            
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro took the lead for good with just under 15 minutes to play in the first half on a 3-pointer by Jaryn Simpson, making it 13-12. The lead eventually grew to 11 points at 35-24 with 3:05 to play on Anthony Coleman's layup. Thiel closed to within six points late in the half before Daylon Harris ended the half with a 3-point play for a 40-31 lead. Coleman and Simpson scored 11 points apiece to lead the Scots. Edinboro held Thiel to just 33.3 percent from the floor (13-of-39).
  • After building the lead to 11 points at 48-37, Thiel went on an impressive run to pull to within a point at 48-47 with 10 straight points, including four by Terrance Holloway. The game remained tight for the next five minutes, although Edinboro maintained the lead. Leading 59-54 with 8:40 to play, the Fighting Scots finally put the Tomcats away thanks to their own spurt of 10 straight points. Alex Jay started the run with a jumper, followed by a jumper by Simpson. DeAnthony Owen's jumper and free throw boosted the lead into double digits at 66-54 with 7:11 remaining. Following a Thiel miss, freshman Turner Kurt buried a three for a 69-54 advantage with 6:31 left to play. 
  • Thiel pulled to within 12 at 71-59, but Edinboro answered with an 10-2 burst for the biggest lead of the night at 81-61 with 1:25 left. Simpson accounted for seven of those points.   
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 42.6 percent from the floor (29-of-68), and made 16-of-28 free throws (68.2 pct.). the Fighting Scots took full advantage of the 3-point arc, making 8 in 28 attempts. Thiel, meanwhile, was held to 36.1 percent from the floor ((26-of-72), making 4-of-16 3-pointers, and went 7-of-11 from the line. 
  • The Fighting Scots held a 48-43 advantage on the glass, with both teams hitting the offensive glass. Edinboro had 16 offensive boards and Thiel 17. The Fighting Scots committed 10 turnovers, but just three over the final 20 minutes. Thiel had 12 turnovers. The Fighting Scots blocked 10 shots, led by Jack Frank  and Turner Kurt with three.
  • Jaryn Simpson led four Fighting Scots in double figures with a career-best 22 points. The sophomore guard was 8-of-9 from the line. He added a career-high 6 assists. A pair of junior college transfers were next. Daylon Harris, a junior forward by way of Western Nebraska CC, scored 15 points and had 8 rebounds, tied for the team lead. He made 7-of-12 field goals and was 1-of-1 at the line. DeAnthony Owens, a junior guard from New Mexico JC, chipped in 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 three's, and 2-of-3 at the line. 
  • Anthony Coleman got off to a fast start with 11 first-half points. The senior guard would end the night with 13 markers, along with 8 rebounds. Jack Frank also pulled down 8 boards along with blocking 3 shots.
  • Freshman Turner Kurt, from nearby Cambridge Springs High School, was 3-of-5 on 3-pointers and finished with 9 points in his first career game, adding 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in 24 minutes.
  • Thiel had a trio of players in double digits. Alonzo Brown led the way with 14 points, and also had a team-high 9 rebounds. After missing all but one game in 2017-18, Terrance Holloway ended the night with 12 points. Daquan Simmons added 10 points.      .
