Staunch Returns with Team-High 14 Points but Edinboro Falls at Lake Erie, 74-60

THE GAME FACTS

  • Score:  Lake Erie 74, Edinboro 60

  • The Short Story: Edinboro's first foray on the road in 2018-19 was unsuccessful as Lake Erie won its third straight game, 74-60. The Fighting Scots never led in the contest, and were done in by a 25-7 run by the Storm to start the second half. One bright spot for Edinboro was the debut of Trey Staunch. After earning All-PSAC West honors at offensive tackle earlier this week, Staunch played 15 minutes and led Edinboro with 14 points. .         
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro would never lead in the first half. Lake Erie jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Edinboro turned the ball over twice early. An Anthony Coleman jumper got Edinboro on the board with 17:33 remaining.
  • The first appearance by Trey Staunch took place with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half and the Fighting Scots trailing 15-9. A Coleman drive pulled Edinboro to 15-11, but a Lake Erie 3-pointer and a layup following a turnover gave the Storm a 20-11 lead. Coleman's two free throws cut the deficit to seven, but a Lake Erie three made it 23-13. 
  • Staunch, the All-PSAC West offensive tackle turned forward, made his presence felt with his signature layup and foul, completing the 3-point play to cut the gap to 23-16 with 7:37 remaining. 
  • Lake Erie's lead eventually grew to 28-16 on Gabe Kynard's 3-pointer. A layup by Turner Kurt and Jaryn Simpson's three pulled the Fighting Scots to within 28-11 with xx left, but the Storm would take a 35-25 lead at halftime on Kinard's rebound basket at the buzzer.
  • Any hopes for a comeback were quickly dashed as Lake Erie opened the second half with a 25-7 run. The Storm scored the first five points to go up 40-26 before DeAnthony Owens' rebound basket made it 40-27. The LEC lead continued to grow, reaching 28 points at 60-32 with 11:24 remaining on a 3-pointer by Mitch Loomis.
  • Edinboro would make the final score more respectable, scoring the final ten points.    
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 29.4 percent from the floor (20-of-68), and made 15-of-19 free throws. The Fighting Scots made 5-of-22 3-pointers. Lake Erie, meanwhile, shot 41.1 percent for the game ((30-of-73), but came in at 51.6 percent over the final 20 minutes. The Storm came in with a penchant for shooting 3-pointers, and they were 9-of-33 on Saturday. 4-of-16 3-pointers. Lake Erie went 5-of-9 from the line. 
  • Lake Erie held a 51-43 advantage on the glass. The Fighting Scots committed 16 turnovers and Lake Erie 18. Yhe Storm held a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint.     
  • Trey Staunch led three players in double figures with 14 points in 15 minutes. The 6'4", 280 lb. senior made 5-of-7 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws in his first action of the season. Earlier in the week, he was named a second team All-PSAC West selection at offensive tackle while wrapping up his football career.
  • Jaryn Simpson and Anthony Coleman added 11 points apiece, but the duo combined to shoot just 7-of-34 from the field. Jack Frank and Turner Kurt had a team-high eight rebounds.   
  • Lake Erie had a trio of players in double digits. Gabe Kynard led the way with 25 points, and also had a team-high 9 rebounds. Erron James added 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists, with Mitch Loomis contributing 10 points.      .

  • Edinboro returns to action on Tuesday, November 20 hosting Penn State Shenango. That contest tips off at 7:00 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
