Coleman Leads Four in Double Digits as Fighting Scots Post 87-56 Win over Penn State Shenango

  • The Short Story: Anthony Coleman led four players in double figures with 18 points as Edinboro feasted on Penn State Shenango in a pre-Thanksgiving contest. The senior guard scored 18 points as the Fighting Scots trailed just once at 2-0 before running away from a very game but outmanned Lions squad. DeAnthony Owens and Trey Staunch added 14 points, with Turner Kurt scoring 12 points and pulling down a game-high 9 rebounds. All 11 players to suit up for Edinboro scored.        
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ramell Askerneese gave Penn State Shenango a 2-0 lead on a layup at the 19:19 mark of the first half, but after that Edinboro never trailed. The Fighting Scots would jump out to a 14-6 lead as DeAnthony Owens contributed 10 points in the early going. 
  • The lead reached double digits at 20-8 on a 3-pointer by Anthony Coleman with 14;12 left in the half, and it never got under double digits after that. 
  • Holding a 22-12 lead, Edinboro would run off the next 11 points on a Jaryn Simpson jumper, a layup by Trey Staunch, Turner Kurt's 3-pointers and layup, and a pair of Staunch free throws. That left Edinboro's lead at 33-212 with just under seven minutes remaining.
  • The Fighting Scots led 43-23 at the half, as Edinboro shot 50.0 percent from the floor (17-of-34), while making 6-of-13 3-pointers. The Lions, meanwhile, came in at 23.3 percent (7-of-30) in the first 20 minutes and missed all nine of their 3-point attempts.
  • Edinboro started slow in the second half, with Penn State Shenango pulling to within 14 points at 44-30 at the 17:23 mark. The Fighting Scots ran off the next seven points -- on a pair of Owens' free throws, a Kurt jumper in the paint followed by a three by the freshman forward -- to build the lead back up to 51-30. The Lions got no closer than 17 points the rest of the way, with the lead growing to as much as 33 points in the final seconds.    
BY THE NUMBERS
  • After struggling from the floor in Saturday's game at Lake Erie, Edinboro shot 49.2 percent from the floor (32-of-65), and made 12-of-22 free throws. The Fighting Scots made 11-of-29 3-pointers. Penn State Shenango shot 32.8 percent from the floor (20-of-61), and missed all 11 of their 3-point attempts. The Lions were 16-of-23 at the line.    
  • Edinboro held a 50-34 advantage on the glass, including 17 offensive boards. The Fighting Scots committed 14 turnovers and Penn State Shenango 13.     
  • Anthony Coleman led four players in double figures with 18 points, making 6-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-6 3-pointers. He added 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and a pair of steals.
  • DeAnthony Owens and Trey Staunch added 14 points apiece, Owens in just 18 minutes Staunch came off the bench to 7 rebounds in 23 minutes. 
  • Freshman Turner Kurt turned in another strong effort. The 6'8" forward made 5-of-8 field goals, including 2-of-4 3-pointers, to finish with 12 points. He added a season-high 9 rebounds with a pair of assists and steals. Starting center Jack Frank contributed 7 rebounds in 17 minutes. Jaryn Simpson matched his career-high with 6 assists, adding 6 rebounds.
  • With the bench receiving plenty of playing time, all 11 Edinboro players scored. Jake Benhart had 7 points and 4 rebounds in 15 minutes, with Alex Jay contributing 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 17 minutes.       
  • Penn State Shenango had two players in double digits. Gannon Murray came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points, while Anthony bailey Jr. had 10 points and 9 rebounds.     . 

 NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS

  • Edinboro will return to action following Thanksgiving with a road contest at Charleston(WV) on Sunday, November 25. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. the Golden Eagles were picked to finish third in the Mountain East Conference preseason poll and are off to a 3-2. start.
