Simpson Drops in 20 Points but Edinboro Now 2-2 after 79-61 Loss at Charleston(WV)

  • The Short Story: A depleted Edinboro squad led early before falling at Charleston(WV), 79-61, in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Scots held the high-scoring Golden Eagles to their lowest point total of the season, but Edinboro shot just 36.9 percent from the floor. Charleston came in ranked ninth in Division II in scoring at 95.2 ppg. The Golden Eagles came in ranked second in the country in field goal percentage and lived up to that ranking, shooting 54.5 percent from  the floor. Drew Rackley, who came in ranked third in the country at 27.2 ppg., led the Golden Eagles with 21 points. He was one of five players in double figures. Jaryn Simpson led Ednboro with 20 points. Leading scorer Anthony Coleman scored Edinboro's first seven points but then went out with an injury and did not return.  
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro took a 5-0 lead early on a pair of baskets by Anthony Coleman. The senior guard opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and followed with a drive to hoop for the 5-0 lead at the 18:44 mar. Charleston responded with eight straight points to take the lead for good. Drew Rackley gave the Golden Eagles the lead with the first of four 3-pointers in the first half, making it 8-5.
  • The Golden Eagles would go up by 18-10 on another Rackley three, but the Fighting Scots closed to 20-15 on DeAnthony Owens' three with 11:36 remaining. Five straight UC points, the last three on Rackley's long-range hoop, gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 25-15. A Trey Staunch short jump hook and a 3-pointer by Simpson cut the lead to five at 25-20, but Charleston scored the next ten points to go up 35-20 with 5:35 left in the half on a pair of free throws by Josh Floyd. 
  • Simpson's four free throws ended UC's 10-0 run, butthe Golden Eagles ended the half on a 8-2 run to lead 43-26 at halftime.
  • Charleston opened the second half with the first eight points to go up 51-26 just over two minutes into the second half. Rackley opened the half with a jumper, and Lamont McManus powered his way inside for the next three hoops.
  • The lead remained above 20 points until Edinboro ran off 12 points in a row to close the gap to 11 with 6:19 to play. Trailing 64-41, Owens hit a 3-pointer to start the run. Steven Freeman followed with a layup to make it 64-46. Daylon Harris' jump hook made it 64-48, and when Simpson buried a three, the Scots were within 13. Following a Charleston turnover, Harris scored on a rebound basket to cap the 12-0 run and make it 64-53. 
  • Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles scored the next nine points to end Edinboro's comeback hopes. Rackley capped the run with his fifth three as the lesd was once again 20 at 73-53 with 4:34 remaining.  
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 36.9 percent from the floor (24-of-65), and made 6-of-8 free throws. The Fighting Scots made 7-of-24 3-pointers. Charleston, meanwhile, once again shot over 50 percent for the game at 54.5 percent (30-of-55). The Golden Eagles made 7-of-18 3-point attempts and were 12-of-18 at the line.          
  • Charleston-held a 38-32 advantage on the glass. Edinboro committed 11 turnovers and UC 12.
  • Jaryn Simpson led Edinboro with 20 points, his second 20-or-more effort of the season. The sophomore guard made 6-of-20 field goals, including 4-of-11 3's, and was 4-for-4 at the line. Trey Staunch was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
  • Anthony Coleman scored Edinboro's first seven points, but the senior guard suffered an injury and did not return. He played just six minutes. In addition, Daylon Hrris played just 18 minutes after suffering an injury in the previous game against Penn State Shenago. DeAngelo Owens also left for a time with an injury,
  • Alex Jay led the Scots with 6 rebounds and also had a pair .of steals.
  • Charleston featured five players in double figures, led by Drew Rackley's 21 points. The junior made 5-of-9 3-pointers. He came into the game ranked third in Division II in scoring (27.2 ppg.) and was also among the leaders in 3-pointers made per game. He scored 47 points in his last outing at Shepherd.
  • Adam Traore had 14 points and 8 rebounds, while Lamont McManus also scored 14 points. Devon Robinson and Josh Floyd scored 11 points apiece. . 

 NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS

  • Edinboro begins PSAC action next weekend with a pair of crossover games. The Fighting Scots play at West Chester on Saturday, December 1, then play at Bloomsburg on Sunday, December 2. Both games tip off at 3 p.m.
