Fighting Scots Open PSAC Play with Loss at Eastern Division Favorite West Chester

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  West Chester 88, Edinboro 37
  • Records:  Edinboro (2-3, 0-1 PSAC West), West Chester (4-3, 1-0 PSAC East)
  • Location:  West Chester, Pa. – Hollinger Field House
  • The Short Story: For Edinboro, it was almost the perfect storm. The Fighting Scots were without team leader Anthony Coleman, a second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, playing at the preseason favorite in the PSAC East. The end result was the worst loss in head coach Pat Cleary's six-year reign. A very talented West Chester team that played in the NCAA Tournament a year hit on all cylinders on Saturday, shooting 51.5 percent from the floor, outrebounding Edinboro 49-36, and forcing 22 turnovers. Edinboro, meanwhile, shot 21.4 percent from the floor.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A string of 23 straight points propelled West Chester to a large halftime lead. With DeAnthony Owens scoring Edinboro's first five points, the Fighting Scots trailed just 6-5. Then came a 23-0 run for the Golden Rams as the lead ballooned to 29-5. The Fighting Scots went almost nine minutes without a point, from the 18:22 mark to 9:28, when Alex Jay's 3-pointer snapped the run.
  • West Chester would take a 54-17 lead into halftime while making 22-of-38 shots (57.9 pct.). Edinboro, meanwhile, came in at 19.2 percent, making 5-of-26 attempts. The Fighting Scots were held to four 3-pointers and one basket inside the arc. Owens had nine points while the rest of the team scored eight points. Frank Rokins had 15 of his game-high 17 points in the first half.
  • The second half didn't start any better for Edinboro, as WCU scored the first six points before a Jay jumper got Edinboro on the board.
  • The Fighting Scots would go through another long scoreless drought in the second half. Jaryn Simpson's layup at 8:23 made the score 72-37, but Edinboro would not score again, missing its final 14 shots.
