Trio Leads Edinboro to 97-94 Overtime Win at Bloomsburg

THE GAME FACTS

  • The Short Story: Jaryn Simpson, DeAnthony Owens, and Trey Staunch combined for 80 points to lead Edinboro to an overtime win at Bloomsburg. The victory came one day after a 51-point loss at West Chester, while Bloomsburg was defeating Gannon at the same time. The Fighting Scots led by 20 points at 47-27 at halftime, but the Huskies roared back to score the final four points of regulation and send the game into overtime. Edinboro built a five-point lead in overtime, but Bloomsburg would take its first lead of the game on Austin Harriott's layup with 56 seconds left. Owens drained a long 3-pointer from the top of the key with 33 seconds to play for the winning basket, and Steven Freeman added a layup with nine seconds left. Sam Saxton's three at the buzzer was no good. Simpson scored a career-high 34 points, adding 5 assists. Owens added a season-high 27 points with 6 rebounds. Staunch, meanwhile, muscled his way inside for 19 points and 9 rebounds. The Fighting Scots played their second straight game without injured guard Anthony Coleman.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro came out on fire, at one point making 13-of-19 shots to start the game. The Fighting Scots scored the first seven points of the game as Daylon Harris opened the scoring with a pair of free throws, followed by a 3-pointer by Jaryn Simpson. DeAnthony Owens' jumper made it 7-0.
  • Leading 12-7, Edinboro once again scored seven straight points to push the lead to double digits at 19-7 with 14:12 left in the first half. Harris' bucket started the run, followed by Owens' long jumper. A Simpson three boosted the lead to 12.
  • Edinboro's lead would remain in double digits the rest of the half, and grow to as many as 22 points at 43-21 with 4:37 to play on another Simpson three. The Fighting Scots would take a 47-27 lead into intermission, with Simpson scoring 17 points. Edinboro shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the half (15-of-29), making 6-of-10 three's, while Bloomsburg was at 35.5 percent (11-of-31), and 1-of-14 on 3-pointers.
  • The second half proved to be a different story. Bloomsburg was able to score repeatedly on layups, 13 in all, while making 16-of-22 free throws. Edinboro still held a 17-point advantage at 63-46 when the Huskies went on a run of 16 straight points. That closed the gap to 63-62 with just under nine minutes to play.
  • Edinboro boosted the lead back up to nine at 78-69 with 3:46 to play on an Owens dunk. Bloomsburg answered immediately with a 13-4 run, with a layup by Austin Marriott knotting the score at 82-82 with 44 seconds to play. Simpson gave the lead back to the Scots on a layup, and following a pair of BU misses, Simpson made two free throws for an 86-82 lead with 14 seconds left. Five seconds later, Sam Saxton drained a three to make it a one-point game. Edinboro turned it over on the inbound play, committing a foul in the process. Ky Mauras made the first free throw, but missed the second. The Scots would turn the nall over in the final second.
  • Edinboro opened the overtime period with a pair of Staunch layups, sandwiched by a Bloomsburg free throw. When Simpson scored on a steal and layup, Edinboro led 92-87.
  • Bloomsburg answered with the next seven points as the Huskies took their first lead of the game at 94-92 with 56 seconds to play on Marriott's layup. Owens gave the lead back to the Scots for good when he drilled a long three from the top of the key at the 33-second mark.
  • Bloomsburg missed a 3-pointer, got the offensive rebound, then missed a layup. Steven Freeman, who entered the game late in overtime after Simpson fouled out, grabbed the rebound and went coast-to-coast for a clinching layup with nine seconds left. Saxton's 3-pointer from the left corner was off the mark as time expired.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • After the hot start, Edinboro would end the game shooting 44.7 percent from the floor (34-of-76). The Fighting Scots made 8-of-26 3-pointers and were 21-of-27 at the free throw line. Bloomsburg ended the day 45.8 percent from the floor (33-of-72), including 6-of-29 on 3-pointers. The Huskies made 22-of-35 at the charity stripe, including a 2-for-9 showing in the overtime period.    
  • Edinboro held a narrow 47-46 advantage on the boards, with the Fighting Scots pulling down 18 offensive rebounds and the Huskies 19.  After committing just three turnovers in the first half, Edinboro would end the game with 14, while Bloomsburg turned it over 15 times.
  • Edinboro scored a season-high 97 points one game after finishing with 37 points. That was the lowest total since a 26-point effort vs. California(Pa.) in 1966-67.
  • Jaryn Simpson led all scorers with a career-high 34 points. The sophomore guard made 10-of-18 field goals, including 5-of-9 3-pointers, and went 9-of-10 at the line. He added 5 assists while playing 42 minutes before fouling out. Simpson has now scored 20-or-more points in three games.
  • Junior transfer DeAnthony Owens dropped in a season-high 27 markers. He made 12-of-23 shots from the floor, including 2-of-7 3-pointers, and went 1-of-3 at the line. Owens added 6 rebounds and 3 steals in 40 minutes.
  • Trey Staunch provided the inside muscle. The offensive tackle-turned-forward had a season-high 19 points. The 6'4", 280 lb. senior made 6-of-14 field goals and was 7-of-10 at the line. He pulled down 8 rebounds.  
  • Alex Jay, a 6'3" sophomore making his second career start, led Edinboro with 9 rebounds. He added 7 points and 3 assists.
  • Bloomsburg featured four players in double figures. Ky Mauras led the way with 28 points, adding 7 assists. San Saxton had 24 points and 9 rebounds, while Travis Elmore registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards. Austin Harriott contributed 13 points
