Walton's 20 Points Not Enough in 79-58 Loss at Virginia Union in Battle of Nationally-Ranked Squads

  • The Short Story:  Edinboro was unable to overcome a slow start in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams on the second day of the Lady Panther Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Virginia Union. The Fighting Scots fell behind 21-9 after one period, and trailed 46-23 at the half. The win avenged an 89-79 loss to Edinboro a year ago for Virginia Union in the opening game of the 2017-18 season. Turnovers plagued the Fighting Scots, as 23 miscues led to 29 points for Virginia Union. In addition. one day after dominating Virginia State in the paint, the Fighting Scots were outscored in the paint, 40-22. Edinboro came into the game ranked 11th in the WBCA Division II Preseason Top 25, while Virginia Union was 18th.        
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ciara Rosten's layup gave Edinboro a 2-0 lead withy 7:42 remaining in the first quarter. That would be the lone lead of the night fro the Fighting Scots. Virginia Union ran off the next nine points and would grab a double-digit lead at 14-4 less than seven minutes into the game. The first quarter would end with the Panthers holding a 21-9 lead.
  • Any hopes of a rally were quickly dispelled as Virginia Union opened the second quarter with a 14-5 run to boost their lead to 35-15. The Fighting Scots would go on a run of their own, outscoring the Panthers, 8-1 over the next two minutes to close to 13 points at 36-23 with 2:27 left in the quarter. However, the Panthers scored the final 10 points of the half to lead 46-23 at intermission.
  • Unfortunately, the second half did not fare much better for the Fighting Scots. The lead grew to as much as 29 points, and never got under 23, with VUU leading 68-42 after three periods.
  • Edinboro outscored Virginia Union, 16-11, in the final period with reserves getting some playing time, 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 35.8 percent from the floor (19-of-53), and after making just 1-of-14 3-pointers last night, they were 6-of-23 vs. Virginia Union. The Fighting Scots ended the night making 14-of-23 free throws. Virginia Union shot 42.9 percent from the floor (30-of-70), making 7-of-23 3-pointers, and went 12-of-21 at the line. 
  • The Panthers held a 40-30 rebounding edge, including 14 on the offensive end. The Fighting Scots were guilty of 23 turnovers, compared to 16 for VUU.  Virginia Union held a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint, 29-19 in points off turnovers.
  • Jontay Walton was the lone player in double figures for the Fighting Scots. The graduate student guard finished with 20 points, including an 8-for-9 showing at the line. Michelle Jahn added nine points and Michaela Barnes eight.
  • After finishing with a double-double against Virginia State, Ciara Rosten was limited to seven points and a team-high nine rebounds, with three blocked shots.
  • Virginia Union featured four players in double digits, led by Jasmine Carter with 17 points and 18 rebounds, eight on the offensive end. Shareka McNeill had 15 points, and Nicole Floyd 13. Bianca Lockamy contributed 12 points.

  • Edinboro is right back in action on Tuesday, November 13, playing at Wheeling Jesuit. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
