Fighting Scots Ride Huge Third Quarter to 92-61 Win at Wheeling Jesuit

  • The Short Story:  Playing for the third time in five days, Edinboro got off to a slow start. Once the 11th-ranked Fighting Scots got going, they went on a huge roll. Leading by a slim 38-35 margin at the half, Wheeling Jesuit took a 39-38 lead early in the third period. Michelle Jahn hit back-to-back three's to give the lead back to Edinboro for good, with a layup by Ciara Rosten capping an 8-0 run to make it 46-39. Edinboro's lead was still just 59-50 with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Fighting Scots would run off the next 20 points , including seven by Rosten and six by Rosten, to blow the game open. That was part of a 27-2 run overall as the lead reached 86-52 with 4:57 left. Edinboro outscored the Cardinals 33-15 in the decisive third quarter. Rosten had her second double-double in three games with 22 and 15 rebounds, leading five players in double digits. Bridgette Shaffer had a career-high 11 points plus 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. After turning the ball over 13 times in the first half, Edinboro committed just six turnovers in the second half.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro led for much of the first quarter, leading by as many as five points, but Wheeling Jesuit would use a late run to take a 26-20 lead after one quarter. The Cardinals outscored Edinboro 11-2 over the last three-plus minutes.  WJU scored 12 points off turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.
  • Khira Burton's basket to open the second quarter gave Wheeling Jesuit its biggest lead of the night at 28-20. The Cardinals still led 33-30 with just under six minutes to play in the quarter before the Fighting Scots held the Cardinals to just one basket the rest of the half. Edinboro would hold a 38-35 lead at intermission. Bridgette Shaffer came off the bench to prove a major factor, contributing 8 points and 8 rebounds as Edinboro shot just 34.2 percent in the half (13-of-38). Ciara Rosten had 11 points and 6 boards.
  • The second half began with WJU pounding the ball inside looking to get Rosten in foul trouble. Chenelle Moore cut the lead to one on a layup, and following Edinboro's 14th turnover of the night, Moore scored again for a 39-39 WJU lead. Michelle Jahn nailed back-to-back three's and the Cardinals never led again. A Michaela Barnes' layup made it eight straight points and a 46-39 lead.
  • That was a sign of things to come. Leading 59-50 with 3:24 remaining in the quarter, Edinboro would score the final 12 points of the quarter, capping a 33-15 third period.  They added the first eight points of the fourth quarter to complete a 20-0 run and take a 79-50 lead on Barnes' 3-pointer with 8:16 left. Rosten had seven points and Jahn six of the 20 points, while Edinboro held the Cardinals scoreless for over five minutes.  
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro shot 45.1 percent from the floor (32-of-71) for the game, but after shooting just 34.2 percent (13-of-38) over the first 20 minutes, they sizzled in the second half at 57.6 percent (19-of-33). The same was true from the 3-point line, as the Fighting Scots made 5-of-18 in the first half (31.3 pct.) and 7-of-12 in the second half (58.3 percent).for 42.9 percent overall (12-of-28). Edinboro made 16-of-25 free throws.
  • Wheeling Jesuit shot 35.7 percent from the floor (20-of-56), including 3-of-15 3-pointers. The Cardinals were 18-of-28 from the charity stripe.
  • Edinboro also dominated on the glass, holding a 52-32 edge. That led to a 20-2 advantage in second-chance points. The Fighting Scots committed 19 turnovers, but just six in the second half. The Cardinals ended the night 18 turnovers.
  • Edinboro had five players score in double-figures, with Ciara Rosten and Bridgette Shaffer registering double-doubles. Rosten has now had two in the first three games after leading Division II with 21 last year.It was first of Shaffer's career. Rosten led all scorers with 22 points, adding 15 rebounds. She added 4 assists and 3 steals. The 6'2" senior made 7-of-12 field goals, including 2-of-2 3-pointers, and was 6-of-9 at the line. She had previously made just one 3-pointer in 11 attempts in her career. Shaffer finished with a career-high 11 points, making 3-of-8 3-pointers, adding 10 rebounds
  • Jontay Walton fell an assist shy of a double. The graduate student guard finished with 16 points and 9 assists, along with 3 steals.She made 3-of-6 3-pointers and was 5-of-5 at the line.
  • Michelle Jahn (6-of-11 FGs, 3-of-8 3's) and Michaela Barnes (7-of-11 FGs) finished with 17 points apiece. Barnes had 7 rebounds, 6 on the offensive end. Jahn now has 1,104 points, leaving her one shy of moving into the top 25 in career scoring.
  • Wheeling Jesuit had a pair of double-figure operatives. Chenelle Moore finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks, while Ashley Rothert had 12 points. 

 NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS

  • After three games on the road in five days, Edinboro now has an extended break. The Fighting Scots don't play again until Saturday, December 1 when they play at West Chester at 1 p.m.
  • That is the start of back-to-back PSAC crossover games, with Edinboro moving on to play at Bloomsburg on Sunday, December 2.
