No. 19 Edinboro Returns from Long Layoff with 91-72 Win at West Chester

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  #19 Edinboro 91, West Chester 72
  • Records:  Edinboro (3-1, 1-0 PSAC West), West Chester (4-4, 0-1 PSAC East)
  • Location:  West Chester, Pa. – Hollinger Field House
  • The Short Story:  Playing for the first time since November 13, Edinboro, ranked 19th in the latest WBCA Division II Top 25, got off to a slow start. But once the Fighting Scots got going, they pulled away to open PSAC play with an impressive road win in a rematch of last year's PSAC Tournament semifinal game. Leading 11-10 after one quarter, the Fighting Scots rode the 3-pointer and Jontay Walton's 15 points in the second quarter to grab a 38-30 halftime lead. Michaela Barnes added 11 points in the third quarter as the lead grew to 18 points at one point before WCU made it 66-55 after three quarters. The Fighting Scots would make 15-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter. All five starters scored in double figures for the Fighting Scots, led by Walton's season-high 25 points.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • As expected, Edinboro got off to a slow start after the long layoff. The Fighting Scots held an 11-10 lead after a low-scoring first half as both teams struggled with their shooting. The Fighting Scots made just 5-of-20 field goals while West Chester was 5-of-17 from the floor.
  • WCU opened the second quarter with a basket by Gabrielle Troisi for a 12-11 lead, but Edinboro ran off the next nine points. The Fighting scots reclaimed the lead on Jontay Walton's 3-pointer, with Bridgette Shaffer adding another three. Ciara Rosten capped the run with a conventional 3-point play.
  • Edinboro would go up by as many as 12 points in the second period at 33-21 when Walton hit her third three of the period and the team's fifth. Walton scored 15 points in the quarter. The Fighting Scots would go into halftime leading 38-30. The poor shooting continued for both teams as Edinboro was 13-of-35 at intermission and West Chester 11-of-33. But the Fighting Scots made 5-of-9 3-pointers in the second quarter and were 6-of-16 from beyond the arc in the first half, while the Golden Rams were just 1-for-10. After neither team went to the free throw line in the first quarter, Edinboro was 6-of-7 and WCU 7-of-10 in the second quarter.
  • After a big second quarter by Walton, backcourt teammate Michaela Barnes took over in the third quarter. The junior guard contributed 11 points as Edinboro would lead 66-55 after three quarters. She scored Edinboro's first six points in the period.
  • The Fighting Scots built the lead to as many as 18 points at 59-41 in the quarter thanks to a 13-3 run. Shaffer got it started with a three, followed by a Barnes' layup. After Rosten hit a 15-foot jumper, West Chester interrupted the run with a bucket. Edinboro then scored the next six points. Barnes made one-of-two free throws, Walton converted a 3-point play, and Rosten scored on a drive.
  • The Golden Rams refused to go away, however. They would run off nine straight points on three layups and a 3-pointer to close to 66-58 early in the fourth quarter. Edinboro answered with six straight points courtesy of Rosten. She scored on a layup, a 15-foot jumper, and a pair of free throws as the lead grew to 72-58.
  • West Chester never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way, as the two teams spent most of the period at the free throw line. Edinboro would make 15-of-18 free throws while WCU was 10-of-15 in the final ten minutes.
