Four Fighting Scots Score Double-Figure Kills in Five-Set Thriller Over Mercyhurst, 3-2.

Cantrill, Jackson, Screptock, and Sterkel all record 10+ kills.

  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team used a strong fifth set to earn a 3-2 win over visiting Mercyhurst as part of Veterans Appreciation Weekend. Senior Megan Screptock recorded her team leading ninth double-double (10 kills, 17 digs) in the win over the Lakers. The Fighting Scots (14-13, 7-10 PSAC) honored veterans from the PA Soldiers' & Sailors' Home prior to the start of the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early in the first set, Edinboro took a 9-5 lead thanks to kills by Paige Morris and Hannah Cantrill. The Lakers would go almost point for point for the next 12 serves with the Fighting Scots holding a 16-11 lead.
  • After a kill by Sally Sterkel gave Edinboro an 18-13 lead, the Lakers called their first timeout. A pair of kills from Megan Screptock followed to push Edinboro's lead up to seven.
  • With the Fighting Scots having a set point at 24-16, Mercyhurst would score the next two points before another Cantrill kills got Edinboro the 25-18 set one win.
  • Edinboro once again jumped out to an early lead and held a 17-10 lead midway through the second set. The Fighting Scots did not allow the Lakers to score more than one point at a time during that stretch.
  • The Fighting Scots led by as many as nine (21-12) before sealing the set two win with another kill by Cantrill.
  • Mercyhurst opened up an 11-2 lead in the third set and pull away late for the 25-16 set win.
  • The two teams went back and forth early in the fourth set with the score knotted up at 9-9. The Lakers would go on a five-point run and force an Edinboro timeout.
  • Coach Missy Soboleski's team tied the score up four more times including 24-24 and 25-25. The Lakers score the final three points of the set to level the match at two sets apiece.
  • Edinboro jumped out to a 6-2 lead thanks to a pair of kills by Cierah Jackson and one by Sally Sterkel and Alicia Eldredge. Mercyhurst used their first time out.
  • The Lakers went on a 7-3 run to tie the match up at 9-9. A Mercyhurst kill gave the Lakers their only lead of the set on the next point.
  • Edinboro took the lead back at 11-10 thanks to a kill by Cantrill and a Laker attack error.
  • After Mercyhurst tied it up at 11-11, Edinboro went on to score the next four points and win the match with a kill by Jackson and a service ace by Cantrill.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Megan Screptock recorded her team leading ninth double-double with a 10 kill, 17 dig outing.
  • Four different Fighting Scots recorded double-figure kills. In addition to Screptock, Hannah Cantrill and Cierah Jackson had 12 each and Sally Sterkel added 10.
  • Alicia Eldredge had 43 assists in the match. It was the second time this week she eclipsed the 40 assist mark and eighth time this season.
  • Molly Breier had a team-high 23 digs in the match. She recorded her second 20+ dig performance against Mercyhurst this season. She totaled 20 back on October 13 in Erie.
  • Three Edinboro players had five blocks in the match. Both Paige Morris and Eldredge had five block assists while Sterkel had a block solo and four block assists.
  • The Fighting Scots led Mercyhurst in attack percentage (.237-.143) and blocks (10-7). Edinboro used a 20 kill, 2 error performance in the first set for a .474 attack percentage while hitting eight kills and zero errors in the final set to seal the win.

  • Edinboro concludes the 2018 season with a match against #20 Gannon on Saturday, November 3 at 6:00 pm. Before the match, Edinboro will honor its three seniors for Senior Night. Hannah Cantrill, Megan Screptock, and Morgyn Sharp will all be honored.
