GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro never trailed in the contest until the final minutes, but could never pull away from the Trojans. The Fighting Scots jumped out to an 8-1 lead behind six points from Ciara Rosten, and would lead 17-12 after one quarter.
  • The Fighting Scots would build the lead to eight points at 28-20 late in the second quarter, but the Trojans closed the half with a 7-2 run to make it 30-27 in a low-scoring first half, with Shayln Washington draining a three with six seconds left.
  • Yazmen Hannah's layup to start the third quarter pulled Virginia State to within a point at 30-29, but Edinboro eventually took its biggest lead of the game at 52-42 with just over a minute to play in the period on Walton's layup. Hannah's three with three seconds left cut the margin to 52-45 after three quarters.
  • Virginia State opened the fourth quarter making 7-of-8 free throws, the last two by Jeane Robinson, to cap a 7-0 run and tie the game at 52-52. The Fighting Scots scored the next five points on a Rosten free throw and a pair of layups by Michaela Barnes to forge ahead, 57-52. Back came the Trojans, scoring the next six points to take their first lead of the night at 58-57 with 4:03 remaining on a pair of free throws by Chrisanna Green.

 DID YOU KNOW

  • After serving as an assistant coach under Stan Swank for 11 seasons, former Edinboro standout and Hall of Fame member Callie Wheeler assumed the duties of head coach early this year. The win over Virginia State is her first as a head coach. She did, however, lead the Fighting Scots to wins over Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst last year while Swank was attending his father's funeral.

 NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
