Staunch Matches Career High as Fighting Scots Hand Mansfield 82-73 Defeat

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Edinboro 82, Mansfield 73
  • Records:  Edinboro (4-4), Mansfield (1-8)
  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. – McComb Fieldhouse
  • The Game Story:  Trey Staunch matched his career high with 22 points and Jaryn Simpson recorded his first career double-double to lead Edinboro to the non-conference win over visiting Mansfield. Staunch was perfect from the floor, going 10-of-10, and he even added a career-high five assists. Simpson, meanwhile, flirted with a triple-double while finishing with 12 points, a career-high 13 rebounds, and seven assists, also a career high. Edinboro never trailed in the game, and led by as much as 18 points in the first half, but was never able to put a Mansfield team away that committed just three turnovers and made 10-of-33 3-pointers. DeAnthony Owens added 18 points and eight rebounds for Edinboro. The Fighting Scots shot a season-high 54.4 percent from the floor (31-of-57) and held a huge edge on the glass at 50-23. Since the Eastern Division ihas one less team than the Western Division, in a blind draw, the Mansfield contest does not count in the PSAC standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro used a 14-2 run midway through the first half to jump out to an 18-point lead at 29-11 with 8:38 remaining in the first half. Owens hit a pair of 3-pointers in the run and Staunch muscled his way to three baskets.
  • The Fighting Scots would maintain the double-digit lead the rest of the half, taking a 46-34 lead into intermission. They shot a sizzling 66.7 percent from the floor (18-of-27), including 7-of-15 on 3-pointers. The Mountaineers shot just 34.2 percent (13-of-38) over the first twenty minutes, and were outrebounded, 25-10, but did not commit a turnover.
  • Mansfield would cut the deficit to six points at 48-42 as the Mountainers scored the first eight points of the second half. DeAnthony Owens would give the Fighting Scots some cushion as he slammed home a monstrous dunk, then followed up with a three from the top of the key to give the Scots a 53-42 lead with just over 16 minutes remaining.
  • The Mountaineers would pull to within five points at 53-48 with 14:15 remaining. While that was the closest they would get as Owens drove to the hoop and Simpson hit a jumper, they would not go away.
  • Three-pointers by Steven Freeman and Turner Kurt boosted Edinboro's lead back up to 72-59. Back came the Mountaineers, as they ran off five straight points to close to 72-64 with 5:37 to play. Kurt, the 6'8" freshman, buried another three to halt the run, and while Tyler Moffe would hit a three for Mansfield, Edinboro answered with another three by Kurt and a Staunch layup to push the lead back to 13 points at 80-67 with 2:13 to play.
