Fighting Scots Wrap Up 2018 Portion of Schedule with 86-81 Loss to Lock Haven

THE GAME FACTS 
  • Score:  Lock Haven 86, Edinboro 81 
  • Records:  Edinboro (4-5, 1-3 PSAC West), Lock Haven (4-4, 3-2 PSAC East) 
  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. – McComb Fieldhouse
  • The Short Story:  After playing catch up since early in the second half, Edinboro would grab a 73-72 lead with 3:30 remaining on the second of back-to-back 3-pointers by Steven Freeman. Lock Haven followed with an 8-0 run, however, as Edinboro went scoreless for almost two minutes. The Bald Eagles would grab an 80-73 lead. Jaryn Simpson's 3-pointer pulled the Scots to within three at 84-81 with 22 seconds left, but Jaylen Washington made a pair of free throws to clinch the game. In fact, Lock Haven's last six points came at the free throw line, four by Washington. Turnovers proved the difference in the game, as Edinboro committed 14 miscues, lead to 18 points for Lock Haven, while the Bald Eagles only had five turnovers, leading to three points for Edinboro. Simpson and freshman Turner Kurt led Edinboro with 16 points apiece, while Lock Haven featured 25 points from Matt Cerruti and 20 from Jihad Barnes. The contest wrapped up the 2018 portion of the schedule.               
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game featured 11 lead changes and three ties, but Lock haven was able to play from in front for much of the game. The Bald Eagles would jump ahead 23-11 while making 9 of their first 14 shots. A 10-0 run pulled the Fighting Scots to within 26-24 with just over five minutes left in the half. DeAnthony Owens opened the run with a 3-pointer, followed by a traditional 3-point play by Turner Kurt. The 6'8" freshman followed with a drive to the basket, and Trey Staunch made it ten straight points with a layup.
  • Edinboro eventually pulled to within a point late in the half at 32-31, but six straight points by Lock Haven boosted their lead to 38-31. Jaryn Simpson and Owens ended the half with three's for Edinboro as Lock Haven held a slim 38-37 lead after one half.
  • The lead went back-and-forth for the first five minutes of the second half, with Edinboro grabbing a 49-47 lead on a Simpson three. Lock Haven came back to take a three-point lead, but an Alex Jay 3-pointer knotted the score at 52-52 with 15:12 remaining.
  • Lock Haven followed with eight straight points, six by Matt Cerruti, to jump out to a 60-52 advantage and force head coach Pat Cleary to call a timeout. Edinboro came out of the timeout with the next seven points on a Staunch layup, a pair of free throws by Daylon Harris, and a Jay trifecta.
  • The Bald Eagles would build the lead back up to 70-65 with just over five minutes to play, but an 8-2 run gave Edinboro its first lead since early in the half. Jack Frank hit a jumper in the paint, and Steven Freeman followed with back-to-back 3-pointers for a 73-72 advantage with 3;30 to play.
  • Unfortunately, Lock Haven followed with the next eight points, five by Cerruti and three by Jihad Barnes, to go ahead 80-73 with 1:53 remaining. The Fighting Scots would cut the deficit to three at 84-81 with 22 seconds to play when Simpson drained his third 3-pointer of the game, but Jaylen Washington hit a pair of free three throws five seconds later, and Simpson's 3-pointer was then off the mark. Lock Haven would gor 6-for-6 from the line over the final 73 seconds.                    
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Edinboro ended the game shooting 46.9 percent from the floor (30-of-64), and sizzled from the 3-point line, making a season-high 14 three's in 28 attempts. The Fighting Scots were 7-of-9 from the line. Lock Haven shot 49.3 percent from the floor (33-of-67), with 6-of-20 3-pointers, and went 14-of-15 at the line.
  • The Fighting Scots committed 14 turnovers to just five for the Bald Eagles. That led to an 18-3 advantage in points off turnovers for Lock Haven. Both teams pulled down 31 rebounds. Lock Haven also dominated in the paint, scoring 44 points compared to 24 for Edinboro.
  • Freshman Turner Kurt scored a season-high 16 points in 18 minutes, as the 6'8" forward was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor, including all three of his 3-point attempts. He also made his lone free throw attempt.  
  • Jaryn Simpson enjoyed another strong effort. The sophomore guard scored 16 points, making 3-of-8 3-pointers, while pulling down seven rebounds and handing out five assists.
  • DeAnthony Owens and Trey Staunch were also in double digits with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Owens made 6-of-12 field goals. Staunch added six rebounds and three assists.
  • Alex Jay led Edinboro in rebounding for the fourth time in five games with eight, and the 6'3" sophomore made 3-of-6 3-pointers for nine points
 NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS 
  • Edinboro will now take a break for the holidays before beginning the 2019 portion of their schedule, opening up PSAC West action vs. California(Pa.) on Wednesday, January 2 Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 7:30 p.m., and wraps up a four-game homestand.
