Walton Leads Way With Big Fourth Quarter as Fighting Scots Prevail over Mansfield, 80-48

  • The Short Story:  Edinboro returned to action following a 10 day break due to final exams. Both teams got off to slow start, with the Fighting Scots leading Mansfield 21-16 at halftime. Edinboro would enter the fourth quarter with a 47-37 advantage, before using a 10-0 run over the first 1:41 to take control of the contest. The Scots finished the game outscoring the Mountaineers 59-32 in the second half. Four Fighting Scots posted double figures, led by Jontay Walton, who scored a career-high 28 points.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Michaela Barnes connected on a pair of free throws just 19 seconds into the game to give Edinboro an early 2-0 lead. However, both teams got off to slow starts, as Tuesday's contest marked both Edinboro and Mansfield's first since December 8. The Fighting Scots were also without forwards Ciara Rosten and Allison Thompson due to injury. 
  • The Fighting Scots started the game shooting 0-for-10, while the Mountaineers went 0-for-8. Combined, the two teams shot 0-for-18. Jontay Walton made the first field goal of the game, when she drained a 3-pointer just under the six-minute mark of the first quarter 
  • The Fighting Scots led 21-16 at the half, but shot 19.0 percent. (8-of-42) and 3-of-16 on 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes. The Mountaineers weren't any better, as they were held to a 25.0 percent clip (7-of-28) and went 0-for-5 from behind the arc. 
  • While the Fighting Scots never trailed in the contest, they led by single digits throughout the first 22 minutes of the game. That changed when Bridgette Shaffer made her second 3-pointer of the third quarter, giving Edinboro a 32-21 lead. 
  • Through 30 minutes of action, Edinboro led 47-37. The Fighting Scots would quickly double their point advantage, as they embarked on an 10-0 over a 1:41 stretch for a 57-37 advantage. Walton started the run scoring on a jumper, followed by back-to-back layups from Michaela Barnes. Michelle Jahn also scored a layup and Walton finished the run with another jumper.  
  • The Fighting Scots capped off the final quarter, outscoring Mansfield, 33-11, on 14-of-23 shooting (60.9 pct.). The Scots also outscored the Mountaineers, 59-32 in the second half, while also making 8-of-14 3-pointers over the final 20 minutes.
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Edinboro ended the game shooting 36.8 percent from the floor (32-of-87), 11-for-30 on 3-pointers, and 5-of-11 at the free throw line. Mansfield was held to a 34.6 percent clip (18-of-52), including 3-of-11 on 3-pointers, and 9-of-14 at the charity stripe. 
  • The Fighting Scots capitalized on points off turnovers, as they forced a season-high 26 turnovers for 23 points, including a 17-0 advantage in fast break points. Edinboro only turned the ball over three times for two points. 
  • Mansfield won the battle on the glass, 51-45, but the Fighting Scots collected 17 offensive rebounds to the Mountaineers' nine. 
  • Edinboro held a 21-8 advantage in assists and 17-3 in steals. 
  • Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures. Graduate Student Jontay Walton led all players with a career-high 28 points, including 13 points in the fourth quarter. The 5'6" guard made a career-high 6 3-pointers on 11 attempts, dished out eight assists, and tied her career-high of six steals. With her 28 points in the win, Walton has scored a 957 career points at Edinboro
  • Redshirt junior Bridgette Shaffer posted her second double-double of the season. The 5'8" guard/forward scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting and made a pair of 3-pointers. She also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds, which ties her career-high. 
  • Junior Michaela Barnes contributed 15 points, passed out six assists, and recorded three steals. 
  • Senior Michelle Jahn was the fourth Fighting Scot to score double digits. The 5'7" guard shot 5-of-12 from the field for 12 points, grabbed eight boards, and had three steals. 
  • Mansfield was led by Paige Whitfield, who scored 13 points. She shot 4-of-7 from the field and went 4-for-4 at the line. Erin Gibbons was the only other Mountaineer to score in double figures, adding 12 points and two 3's. Mia Leonard brought down a game-high 13 rebounds and five blocks. She nearly recorded a double-double with nine points. 
 NEXT FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS 
  • Edinboro hosts Lock Haven in a PSAC crossover contest on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. 
  • Due to the PSAC's balanced scheduling with the Eastern Division one team short of the Western Division this season, the Fighting Scots game vs. Mansfield did not count towards their conference record. Wednesday's contest vs. Lock Haven will count towards league standings..
