Five Fighting Scots Score Double Figures in 97-57 Victory over Cheyney

  • The Short Story: Edinboro scored a season-high 97 points, as the Fighting Scots won their fourth consecutive game and remained undefeated at home against Cheyney thanks to five Fighting Scots scoring in double figures. Michaela Barnes led the Fighting Scots offensively for the third time in the previous four contests, scoring a game-high 23 points. Jontay Walton added 17 points and Michelle Jahn contributed 16 points. Bridgette Shaffer scored 11 points, while Sarah Fischer contributed a season-high 10 points, with all of her points coming in the second half. Edinboro never trailed in the contest, as the Fighting Scots outscored the Wolves, 51-26 in the second half and led by as much as 40 points late in the fourth quarter. The Fighting Scots also welcomed back Ciara Rosten, who missed the last four games due to injury.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While Edinboro entered the contest coming off a 10-day break, the Fighting Scots did not struggle offensively against Cheyney. The Fighting Scots scored the first seven points of the game behind layups from Jontay Walton and Bridgette Shaffer, and a Walton 3-pointer.
  • Edinboro led 26-13 after 10 minutes, with 24 of their points coming from Walton (9), Michaela Barnes (8), and Shaffer (7).
  • The Wolves opened the second quarter by scoring 12 of the first 19 points of the stanza. That cut Edinboro's lead to as much as eight points at 33-25 with 3:30 remaining in the quarter.
  • That would be as close as Cheyney got the rest of the game, as Edinboro built its lead back to double digits with a 46-31 halftime advantage.
  • Midway through the third period and Edinboro leading, 54-37, the Fighting Scots used a 13-0 run to lead by 20+ points the rest of the way. Barnes started the run by scoring six straight points, as she laid in back-to-back baskets and converted a pair of free throws. Michelle Jahn then shot 2-for-2 at the line and drilled a 3-pointer. Shaffer capped off the scoring run with a layup. 
BY THE NUMBERS  
  • Edinboro had its best shooting performance of the season, with a 53.1 percent clip (34-of-64) from the floor. The Fighting Scots also connected on 8-of-25 3-pointers and were 21-of-25 at the free throw line. Cheyney was 20-of-55 shooting overall, including 2-of-5 on 3's and 15-of-21 at the charity stripe. 
  • The Fighting Scots held advantages in rebounding (46-27), assists (18-6), and steals (12-7). In addition, Edinboro scored 30 points off 20 turnovers, while committing 15 for 8 points. The Fighting Scots also outscored the Wolves 40-22 in the paint, 17-6 in second-chance points, and 23-0 in bench points.
  • The 97 points scored against the Wolves is the most points the Fighting Scots have scored this season. The last time they scored more than 97 was last season against West Chester in the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament, 106-78.
  • Five Fighting Scots scored in double figures, led by Michaela Barnes, who scored a game-high 23 points in 20 minutes of action. The 5'5" guard shot 7-of-10 on the day, drilled her lone 3-pointer attempted, and was a perfect 8-for-8 on free throws.
  • Jontay Walton contributed 17 points, shooting 6-of-9 on the day. The 5'6" guard also dished out six assists, recorded six steals, brought down five rebounds, and had one block. With 985 career points, Walton, a graduate student, is 15 points away from reaching 1,000 for her career. 
  • Michelle Jahn scored in double figures for the seventh consecutive game with 16 points, including two 3-pointers, and went 6-for-6 at the line. Bridgette Shaffer added 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting and collected a team-best six rebounds, including three offensive boards. The 5'8" guard/forward has led Edinboro on the glass in three straight games.
  • Sarah Fischer posted a season-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. She also set a career-high in rebounds, grabbing six boards, including three offensive rebounds.
  • Ciara Rosten returned to the hardwood following a three-game absence due to injury. In 12 minutes of action, the 6'2" redshirt senior scored two points, collected four rebounds, and blocked one shot.
  • Marlon Herring led Cheyney with 23 points and seven rebounds, with five coming on the offensive end. Jamyra Maye also contributed double figures with 14 points.

  • Edinboro opens the new year with their first PSAC West contest of the season against No. 13 California(Pa.) on Wednesday, January 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
