Dominant Rosten, Stifling Defense Lead to 63-42 Win over Gannon and Eighth Straight 20-Win Season

EDINBORO, Pa. – Make it eight straight 20-win seasons and another sweep of the season series with Gannon for the 13th-ranked Edinboro women's basketball team. Ciara Rosten enjoyed a dominating day inside to lead Edinboro to a 63-42 win over the Lady Knights at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

The victory boosted Edinboro to 20-2 overall and 16-2 in the PSAC West, as the Fighting scots remain in first place in the division. Gannon dropped to 13-11 and 10-8, respectively, with the loss. Edinboro now has a 186-48 record over the last eight years. Head coach Stan Swank's team has run off seven straight victories.

Saturday was also Edinboro's third annual "Hoops for Harlie" Day, dedicated to the memory of former Girard High School standout Harlie Rae Bolt, who tragically passed away following a short battle with leukemia. All proceeds raised throughout the day benefit "Halos for Harlie" Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Gannon led briefly in the game before Edinboro turned up the defense and rode Rosten inside for their second straight regular season sweep. The Fighting scots grabbed the lead for good at 11-10 on a Rosten layup, and would lead 17-13 after one quarter.

After losing to Edinboro by 34 points in the first meeting, an improved Gannon team hung with the Scots through the first half, trailing just 31-24. Edinboro would employ a stifling defense in the second half, limiting Gannon to just 18 points as the Lady Knights made just 7-of-22 shots. The 42 points allowed was the lowest total by an opponent this season.

The third quarter proved to be the difference for the Fighting Scots, outscoring Gannon 18-7 for a 50-31 lead. Leading 38-29 midway through the period, Edinboro closed the third quarter on an 11-2 run. Of course, it was Rosten who led the way with eight points in the run. The other three points came from Michele Jahn, who snapped out of a recent shooting slump with a three. Gannon never got closer than 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Rosten enjoyed the second 30-point game of her career, as the senior forward made 13-of-23 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws for 30 points. She added 13 rebounds for her 13th double-double, and had four assists and three blocks. She broke the season record for blocked shots, boosting her total to 84.

Jontay Walton and Jahn finished in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jahn made 3-of-7 3-pointers and handed out five assists. Michaela Barnes had eight points in the first half, but did not play in the second half due to an injury. Bridgette Shaffer was the only other Fighting Scot to score, making a basket.  

Julia Braungart led Gannon with 13 points, and Maggie Mitchell was also in double figures with 11.

Edinboro shot 39.0 percent from the floor (23-of-59), making 5-of-13 3-pointers, and was 12-of-14 at the line. Gannon was held to 31.4 percent shooting (16-of-51), making 5-of-25 3-pointers. The Lady Knights were 5-of-6 at the line. Edinboro held a 39-31 rebounding edge and forced Gannon into 23 turnovers while committing 13.    

The Fighting Scots return to action against on Wednesday, February 14, hosting Slippery Rock at 5:30 p.m.
