13th-Ranked Edinboro Drills 13 3-Pointers in 94-61 Win Over Slippery Rock

EDINBORO, Pa. - The 13th-ranked Edinboro women's basketball team got into a rhythm from long range, making a season-high 13 3-pointers in a 94-61 win over Slippery Rock on Wednesday at McComb Fieldhouse. Winners of their last eight contests, the Fighting Scots improved to 21-2 overall and 17-2 in the PSAC West. The Rock fall to 12-13 overall and 10-10 in conference play. 

The win is also a milestone mark for head coach Stan Swank, who picked up his 575th career win. In his 31 years at Edinboro, he has gone 575-303 overall. The Fighting Scots rank 13th in the WBCA Division II Top 25 poll and are 15th in the D2SIDA Top 25 rankings.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the first quarter. However, the Fighting Scots used a 13-0 run between the first and second quarters to boost an 18-15 lead to 31-15. Edinboro made 5-of-7 field goals during the stretch, and held The Rock scoreless over 6:22 between periods.  '

Whitney Allen started the run with a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. Ciara Rosten started the second quarter off with a layup, followed by a layup and 3-pointer from Jontay Walton. After Rosten split a pair of free throws, Michelle Jahn capped off the run with a layup at 6:51. 

Edinboro went into the half up 39-27 and led by as much as 18 points over the first 20 minutes. Slippery Rock started the second half by cutting the Scots lead to six points on two occasions over the first four minutes. But that's as close as SRU made it the rest of the way. 

With three and a half minutes gone by in the quarter, Rosten was issued a technical foul, giving her three fouls in the contest. She headed to the bench with Edinboro up 43-35. The Fighting Scots would outscore Slippery Rock 18-10 the rest of the stanza for a 66-44 lead heading into the final quarter. 

Edinboro only made nine baskets in the fourth quarter, but six of them came from long range. Allen scored her second 3-pointer in the game and the first points in the period. The Fighting Scots started to find their stroke from behind the arc as they kept draining 3-pointers. Michaela Barnes drilled three 3-pointers and Sarah Fisher connected on two shots from long range. The Fighting Scots led by as much as 38 points with 2:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. 

Edinboro ended the contest tying its season-high of 94 points and scored 90 points for the third time this year. The Fighting Scots shot 41.6 percent (32-of-77) from the floor, 13-of-27 on 3-pointers and made 17-of-26 free throws. Slippery Rock was held to a 36.1 percent (22-of-61) clip, including 7-of-20 3-pointers. The Rock went 10-for-19 at the line. 

The Fighting Scots outscored The Rock 36-22 in the paint, scored 20 points off 19 SRU turnovers, had a 21-4 advantage in fast break points and led 23-8 in second chance points.

Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures with Michaela Barnes leading the pack with 25 points. She connected on 9-of-17 shots, 5-of-7 3-pointers and went 2-for-3 at the charity stripe. Michelle Jahn contributed 18 points, drilled a pair of 3-pointers, made 4-of-5 free throws, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out four assists and committed zero turnovers in 29 minutes. The 5'8" guard has now made 180 career 3-pointers, ranking fifth on the all-time list.  

Jontay Walton added 17 points, made two 3-pointers and recorded six dimes. Ciara Rosten went for 11 points, nine boards, three assists, and tied her career-high of seven blocks against The Rock. She originally set her career-mark earlier this season at Slippery Rock.

Whitney Allen collected a career-high 18 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass, while Allison Thompson tied her career-best of eight boards. 

Brooke Hinderliter led SRU offensively with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Madison Johnson and LeeAnn Gibson also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectfully.  

Edinboro heads to the road for its next two contests. The Scots return to the court on Saturday at Clarion with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
