13th-Ranked Fighting Scots Shut Down Clarion in First Half for 79-45 Victory

CLARION, Pa. - A 14-0 run and strong defense helped No. 13 Edinboro spoil Clarion's Senior Day in a 79-45 decision on Saturday at Tippin Gymnasium. With the win, the Fighting Scots move to 22-2 overall and 18-2 in the PSAC West, while the Golden Eagles fall to 7-18 on the year and 2-19 in conference play with their 14th consecutive loss. Edinboro's 22nd win of the year marks the programs most wins in a season since the 2013-14 campaign when the Fighting Scots won 27 games.

Edinboro currently ranks 13th in the WBCA Division II Top 25 and is 15th in the D2SIDA Top 25 poll.

With 5:25 left in the opening quarter, Edinboro and Clarion were knotted at 6-6. Whitney Allen split a pair of free throws and put the Fighting Scots back on top at 7-6. Her free throw was the first points of a 12-0 run to end the quarter. Ciara Rosten scored the next four points on a layup and back-to-back free throws. Jontay Walton followed with a jumper and Michelle Jahn tallied her first points of the contest with a layup. Rosten extended the lead to 17-6 with her third layup in the stanza and Jahn ended the period converting a free throw.

Edinboro entered the second stanza up 18-6. Michaela Barnes scored her first points in the contest and in the period on a jumper, extending the Edinboro run to 14-0. The Fighting Scots went into the half up 34-12. They shot 36.1 percent (13-of-36) from the floor after 20 minutes of action but had a 22-4 point advantage in the paint. Clarion was held to a 20.0 percent (6-of-30) clip. The Golden Eagles connected on three field goals in each period for six points apiece. Ciara Rosten collected her 14th double-double of the year in 17 minutes with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

In the second half, Clarion never cut the Edinboro lead to single digits. The Fighting Scots led by as much as 34 points with 7:38 remaining in the contest.

Edinboro ended the game connecting on 42.9 percent (30-of-70) of its shots, including 3-of-16 3-pointers and 16-of-24 free throws. Clarion was held to 24.3 percent (17-of-70) from the floor, including 6-of-26 from behind the arc, and were 5-for-10 at the line. The 45 points allowed to Clarion is the second-fewest Edinboro has given up this season.

The Fighting Scots grabbed a season-high 60 rebounds, while holding the Golden Eagles to 40 boards. Edinboro dominated Clarion in the paint for a 46-10 point advantage, led 12-4 in fast break points, and outscored the Golden Eagle bench, 20-11. They also dished out eight more assists than Clarion with 16.

Rosten led all players with 27 points and 20 rebounds. She shot 11-of-20 from the floor, connected on 5-of-6 free throws, and blocked three shots. The 6'2" forward has now blocked at least two shots in 23 consecutive contests. Jontay Walton was the only other player in the game to score in double figures. She contributed 20 points, including 10 in the third quarter on 8-of-17 shooting and 4-of-5 free throws. The 5'5" guard led all players with three steals. 

Whitney Allen brought down double-digit rebounds for the second straight game with 11 rebounds, including five offensive. She has recorded double-figure boards in four of Edinboro's last five contests. Bridgette Shaffer came off the bench for eight rebounds.

Clarion was led offensively by Jordan Bekelja with nine points. Yasmin Lewis led the Golden Eagles in rebounds with 12. Senior's Amesha Harden-Pullium and Marina Kelly played in their final home contest for Clarion. Harden-Pullium, an Erie, Pa. native and Villa Marie standout scored eight points, while Kelly added seven points.

The Fighting Scots return to the court on Wednesday, as they head to No. 11 Indiana(Pa.). The contest features the top two teams in the Western Division and will play a large role in the deciding outcome of the top three West seeds for the PSAC Tournament.The top two seeds will receive a first-round bye.

Wednesday's contest will be streamed on Watch ESPN and the ESPN App. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
