GREENSBURG, Pa. –
Michaela Barnes scored a career-high 28 points, and 13th-ranked Edinboro picked up its 19th win of the season with a 75-61 victory over Seton Hill on Wednesday at the McKenna Center. With the win, the Fighting Scots are now one win away from their eighth consecutive 20-win season.
The Fighting Scots, now winners of sixth in a row, improved to 19-2 overall, 15-2 in the PSAC West and 18-1 all-time against the Griffins. Seton Hill fell to 17-7 overall and 12-6 in the Western Division. Edinboro ranks 13th in the WBCA Division II Top 25 and 18th in the D2SIDA Top 25.
In the opening quarter, the Fighting Scots jumped out to a 9-3 lead, as they made their first four shots.
Ciara Rosten scored two layups for four points, Barnes drilled a 3-pointer and
Jontay Walton added a layup. Seton Hill responded with five straight points and cut the deficit to one.
However, a 9-0 Edinboro run that lasted 2:38 cushioned the Fighting Scot lead. Barnes scored the first seven points on a 3-pointer and back-to-back layups, while Rosten capped off the run with a layup. After 10 minutes, Edinboro held a 24-14 lead with Barnes and Rosten each scoring 10 points in the period. The Fighting Scots also shot 50.0 percent (10-of-20) from the field and had a 16-4 point advantage in the paint.
The lead increased to as much as 16 points on two occasions in the second stanza. Edinboro would be without
Jontay Walton for the majority of the quarter, as she was held to 12 minutes of action in the first half with two fouls.
Seton Hill ended the half on a 7-2 run, but Edinboro led 37-30 at the break. The Griffins would trim the Scots lead to four points at 39-35 and 48-44 over the first 5:40 of the stanza. However, that would be as close as they got the rest of the way. A layup from Walton at the 4:09 mark sparked a 9-2 Fighting Scot run, which increased the lead back to double digits at 57-46. During the run,
Michelle Jahn, Barnes and Rosten each scored on a layup, and Rosten also split a pair of free throws.
Edinboro held a double-digit lead throughout the entire fourth quarter. Its largest lead of the game was 18 points, following a Rosten layup at the 2:06 mark.
Edinboro never trailed in the contest, and ended the night shooting 43.7 percent (31-of-71) from the floor, 6-of-13 on 3-pointers, while connecting on 7-of-13 free throws. Seton Hill posted a 30.9 percent (21-of-68) clip, shot 9-for-25 from behind the arc and went 10-for-14 at the line.
Once again, the Fighting Scots excelled in the paint and on the glass. Edinboro outscored Seton Hill 48-22 in the paint and 52-41 in rebounds. The Fighting Scots also had a 13-3 advantage in second chance points and a 17-13 edge in assists.
Ciara Rosten tied the season record in blocks
with seven at Seton Hill. With her 81 blocks this season,
she is one block away from breaking the single
season record at Edinboro.
Barnes had a career-day, leading all players with a career-high 28 points. The 5'6" guard made 11-of-19 baskets, was 5-for-7 on her 3-pointers and dished out five assists. Her total field goals and 3-pointers made and attempted, in addition to her five assists were career-highs.
Rosten scored a season-high 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting and 5-of-8 free throws. She also brought down 15 rebounds, including six offensively, for her 12th double-double of the year. The PSAC West Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week also tied her career-best seven blocks, and has blocked a minimum of two shots in every contest but the season opener. With 81 blocks this season, the 6'2" forward tied the school record in blocks in a season. With one block this weekend against Gannon, she will break the single season record at Edinboro.
Walton was the only other Fighting Scot in double digits with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. She also had six dimes, five rebounds and one block.
Whitney Allen collected a season-high 12 boards, while Jahn tied her career-best 11 rebounds and four steals.
For Seton Hill, Jenna Kaufman collected a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. She also dished out a team-high five assists. Courtney Cecere came off the bench for 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting in 21 minutes. Cheyenne Trest and Lindsey Mifsud each scored 11 points.
Edinboro plays its next two games at McComb Fieldhouse. On Saturday, the women's basketball team will hold their third annual 'Hoops for Harlie' event against Gannon. In addition, Edinboro is hosting Make-A-Wish Awareness Day. The Fighting Scots and Lady Knights are scheduled for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
