EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro's
Candace McDole had another busy dal in goal on Wednesday afternoon, and in the process the freshman set a school record. McDole finished with 18 saves to boost her season total to 172, a new school record. Unfortunately, it came in a 15-6 loss to Slippery Rock.
The Fighting Scots are now 3-9 overall and 0-8 in PSAC action, and have now lost eight straight matches. Slippery Rock improved to 9-3 and is 5-3 in the PSAC.
McDole broke a record that ended up not standing for long, as
Paige Skinner had 170 saves a year ago. The freshman will have an opportunity to add to that total with five contests still remaining.
The Rock scored the first four goals in what was a low-scoring first half. The first goal came at 26:24 by Jasey Sanders, and less than a minute later (25:43) Tori Penders scored to make it 2-0.
The score remained that way for over 12 minutes until Sanders scored her second goal of the match at 13:15. Tia Torchia boosted the lead to 4-0 with 5:14 left. Edinboro got on the scoreboard on a free position goal by
Hannah Fitzgerald with 4:22 remaining in the first half. It was her ninth goal of the season. Sanders scored her third of four goals to make it 5-1 at halftime with 2:49 remaining.
SRU opened the second half with a pair of goals, but Edinboro answered with
Stephanie Chido's 13
th goal at 25:39 to cut the deficit to 7-2.
Sophie DePalma assisted on the goal.
Edinboro was unable to put together back-to-back goals in the contest as Slippery Rock began to pull away. Freshman DePalma scored Edinboro's next two goals at 19:51 and 18:29, the latter making it 10-4. DePalma now has a team-leading 24 goals.
Lindsey Brinkel, another freshman, scored Edinboro's final two goals, giving her 18 on the season.
SRU held a 40-19 advantage in shots, and Edinboro committed 32 turnovers compared to 21 for The Rock. Sanders led SRU with four goals, with Erin Brown contributing two goals and two assists and four other players scoring twice. Emily Bitka was in goal for Slippery rock, finishing with seven saves.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, April 14, hosting 11
th-ranked West Chester at 1 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
