Edinboro Opens Rebich Investments Invitational With 3-0 Sweep Over Lock Haven

  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team opened the Rebich Investments Invitational with a 3-0 sweep of Lock Haven on Friday night. Senior Megan Screptock recorded her first double-double of the season to lead the Fighting Scots in a non-conference win over the Bald Eagles. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro fell behind 4-0 early in the first set.
  • The Fighting Scots forced a Lock Haven timeout after going on an 8-2 run to take a two-point lead with kills by freshman Sally Sterkel and sophomore Cierah Jackson.
  • The first set was only tied one more time at 9-9 before Edinboro pulled away and took the first set 25-19.
  • The Bald Eagles took a 3-0 set lead to start the second set.
  • Much of the second set was a back and forth with ties at eight, nine, 10, 14, 14, 16, and 17.
  • Edinboro would pull away with four straight points with a pair of service aces from Jackson and two Lock Haven attack errors.
  • The Bald Eagles would pull within one on four more occasions before a kill by Jackson sealed the set with 25-23.
  • The early part of the third set went back and forth with neither team leading by more than one point before Edinboro pull ahead 12-7.
  • Two service aces from sophomore Jessica Giannoccaro pushed the Fighting Scot lead up to five at 18-13 and forced a Lock Haven timeout.
  • A pair of Bald Eagle attack errors and a kill by freshman Alicia Eldredge finished off Lock Haven in the third, 25-20.

GAME NOTES
  • Edinboro out hit the Bald Eagles, .176 to .099 for the match.
  • The Fighting Scots have swept matches from Lock Haven now for the third consecutive season, having not lost since the 2013 season, 3-2.
  • Edinboro held advantages in kills (44-30), assists (42-28), service aces (8-3), and blocks (6-5).
  • The contest featured 15 lead changes throughout the three sets.
  • Senior Megan Screptock recorded her first double-double of the season (10 kills, 21 digs). She was the 2015 PSAC West Freshman of the Year.
  • Sterkel led Edinboro with 11 kills and attack percentage (.500). She had only two errors on the evening.
  • Eldredge had a season and career-high 33 assists in the sweep.
  • Edinboro had five different players with at least five kills, led by Sterkel's 11 and Screptock's 10.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The match was a non-conference matchup between the two PSAC opponents.
  • Eldredge has had over 22 assists in four of Edinboro's five matches this season.
  • The Fighting Scots have at least eight service aces in three of their matches this year.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Northwest Division according to the league's preseason coaches' poll.
  • The 3-0 win over Lock Haven marks the 12th sweep over the past two seasons.
  • Edinboro returns to the court for a pair of matches on Saturday, September 1 with matches against Davis & Elkins (12 noon) and Glenville State (4:00 p.m.) Both matches are part of the Rebich Investments Invitational.
