Fighting Scots Conclude Rebich Investments Invitational With Wins Over Davis & Elkins and Glenville State

  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team dropped the first set against Davis & Elkins before winning the next three to move to 4-2 on the season. The match was part of the Rebich Investments Invitational hosted by the Fighting Scots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first set before the Senators tied up four points later.
  • Davis & Elkins used runs of five and four to take a 15-11 midway through the first set.
  • The Senators took the first set 25-18 with a kill by Luann O'Kane.
  • The second set went back and forth with no team ahead by more than one before Edinboro went on a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 lead.
  • Sophomore Cierah Jackson closed out the set (25-16) with a kill to even the match at a set apiece.
  • Edinboro never trailed in the third set after jumping out to a 9-4 lead early on.
  • The Fighting Scots pushed their lead up to seven after a four point run including a pair of kills by Jackson, a service ace from sophomore Molly Brier, and a Senator attack error.
  • Edinboro won eight of the last night points of the third set (25-14) to move ahead, 2-1.
  • Davis & Elkins jumped out to a 13-7 lead over Edinboro in the fourth set.
  • With the Senators leading 21-17, the Fighting Scots rallied off the eight of the next 10 points to win the set (25-23) and the match (3-1).
 GAME NOTES
  • Edinboro out hit the Senators for the match .162-.126.
  • After a negative attack percentage in the first set (-.129), the Fighting Scots had 14 kills and just four errors in the second for a .312 attack percentage.
  • Freshman Sally Sterkel set a new career-high in kills with 15 in the win. She hit .462 for the match.
  • For the second match in a row, freshman Alicia Eldredge had at least 30 assists. She nearly had a double-double with eight kills.
  • Both Sophomores Hannah Brentar and Molly Brier had double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively.

  • Location: Edinboro, Pa. – McComb Fieldhouse
  • The Short Story: The Edinboro volleyball team wrapped up action at the Rebich Investments Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-12) sweep over Glenville State. The Fighting Scots went 3-0 on the weekend with win over the Pioneers. Edinboro was the host for the tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Much of the first set went back and forth early on with the match tied up at 10-10.
  • The Fighting Scots went on a 5-0 run culminating in a service ace by Eldredge.
  • The Pioneers pulled within one at 21-20, but four straight Edinboro points with two kills by Sterkel, Jackson and a service ace by senior Megan Screptock.
  • The second set, again, was a back and forth.
  • The set featured 11 ties and eight lead changes.
  • Once again the Fighting Scots were ahead 21-20 in a set and took a 2-0 lead in the match with a kill by Screptock.
  • The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set and never looked back.
  • The closest the Pioneers got the rest of the set was with Edinboro leading 8-5.
  • During the set, the Fighting Scots used runs of five, four, and three to pull away and take the set 25-12 and the match 3-0.
 GAME NOTES
  • Edinboro out hit the Pioneers every set and the match (.321-.179)
  • In the third set, the Fighting Scots committed only one attack error while hitting 16 kills.
  • For the second day in a row, Screptock had a double-double. She tallied 13 kills and 14 digs in the match.
  • Eldredge set a new career-high in assists with 40 in the sweep. It also sets a new Edinboro record for number of assists in a three-set match. The record of 38 was previously held by Brittany Centorbi (2011 vs. Mercyhurst) and Sydney Trathen (2015 vs. West Virginia State).
  • Edinboro led the Pioneers in kills (46-31), attack percentage (.321-.179), assists (45-30), and blocks (6-2).
  • The two teams were tied in service aces (9-9) and digs (45-45).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Fighting Scots went 3-0 on the weekend and are now 6-1 the past two seasons at the Rebich Investments Invitational.
  • Edinboro now has three sweeps on the season after 3-0 wins over Lock Haven and Davis & Elkins this weekend.
  • Edinboro has only dropped two sets in their wins this season. They haven't been pushed to a fifth set so far.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Northwest Division according to the league's preseason coaches' poll.
  • The 3-0 win over Glenville State marks the 13th sweep over the past two seasons.
  • Edinboro returns to the court next weekend when they travel to Manchester, N.H. for the Hawks Invitational hosted by Saint Anselm. The Fighting Scots will open on Friday, September 7 with a 4:00 p.m. match against the host Hawks. They will then play a pair of matches on Saturday, September 8 against Mercy (12:15 p.m.) and Pace (2:30 p.m.).
